Culture: Can’t we just say Mark Zuckerberg’s a nice guy for donating $100M?

Mark Zuckerberg 26 year old founder of FaceBook donates 100 million to The Newark New Jersey School system.. Please RT this is AMAZING!!Thu Sep 23 21:34:53 via web

  • Know how you know you did something great? Because you have a cool, confident guy with a million followers turning into a total fanboy. That’s how impressive Mark Zuckerberg’s $100 million donation to Newark, New Jersey’s dilapidated school district was. On a side noote, can we just say that anyone giving Zuck crap over this is a scumbag? We know that makes the NY Post, New York Magazine and Gawker or mortal enemies, but at least Arianna Huffington still likes us. Oh, and Tyrese. He thinks we’re cool, too. source

Culture: Misguided outfit of the day: Katy Perry wearing faux-cleavage for Elmo

  • Katy Perry has cleavage. No getting around that, unless you’re the Children’s Television Workshop and you decide you can’t show that kind of thing to preschoolers. So, whaddya do? You have the pop starlet wear a top that looks exactly like skin, getting around the cleavage problem in the most inefficient way possible and making people think that, yes, she’s falling out of her top. How hilarious is it that Perry’s apparently trying to soften her sultry image for kids? And failing? (On a side note, Perry barely snatched the “Misguided outfit of the day” award from Jennifer Lopez.) source

Culture: “Christmas With a Capital C”: An anti-atheism soon-to-be classic

  • We’ve actually been wondering what Ted McGinley and Daniel Baldwin have been up to all these years. Here’s our answer – making anti-atheism Christmas films. Beyond the plot being absolutely, completely over-the-top – big-city atheist comes home to small town to ruin Christmas for hard-working small-town folk – it’s also based on a Christian rock song and will be distributed by a Christian film company. We can’t wait until TNT airs this for 24 hours straight. source

Culture: “My Generation” may be fake, but its iPad app is pretty real

  • While we admit to being disappointed that the plot to this ABC series isn’t actually a documentary where a bunch of kids were followed and retraced a decade later, we will admit that this is pretty cool. This iPad app can detect audio from the episode and provide cues from within the app. We live in the future, guys. Kinda. source

Culture: Sacha Baron Cohen as Freddie Mercury: Why the heck not?

  • He needed another direction, so why not Freddie Mercury? Sacha Baron Cohen’s films – specifically “Borat” and “Bruno” are entertaining in a very painful way, but it’s the kind of amazing trick that only works for so long. First, people will figure out it’s you. Second, it’s the kind of joke that can get old very quick – comparing “Borat” to “Bruno” on Metacritic is a major hint that the joke fell flat. We like the idea of Cohen playing the Queen singer – he has no issues with playing flamboyant gay characters, wearing spandex, or with growing over-the-top mustaches. Plus, the director on deck, Peter Morgan, also directed “Frost/Nixon” and “The Last King of Scotland,” two rock-solid flicks from the last few years. Maybe this’ll be a great direction for him. source

Culture: Ben Affleck as director: It’s catching on, according to the box office

  • $20 million the amount Affleck’s acclaimed directorial debut, “Gone Baby Gone,” made in its entire run
  • $23 million the amount Affleck’s acclaimed follow-up, “The Town,” made just this weekend alone source
  • » What’s the difference? A few things could’ve caused it. First, Affleck is the star of “The Town,” whereas he didn’t show up in front of the camera at all during “Gone Baby Gone.” Second, “Baby” could’ve been a strong calling card for Affleck the director. Third, there was a more obvious studio push of “The Town,” which meant that people knew about it. That said, our money was totally on “Easy A” to win this weekend. Emma Stone killed in that movie.

Culture: Porn stars: We’re starving; pay for our greatest resource, porn

  • “This is my serious face.” No irony exists in this video, created a few months ago by a porn-industry group called the Free Speech Coalition and featuring numerous porn stars and behind-the-scenes figures, whose wholesome livelihoods are getting greatly damaged by the so-called “Tube” sites that offer a similar product for free. Apparently the popularity of those sites have knocked porn-company revenues down by a third or more. Which is why these porn stars decided to put their clothes on for a change. They’re all ready for the congressional hearing. source

Culture: Will Arnett/David Cross joints: Not one, but TWO of them

  • “running Wilde”: Will Arnett’s JointWe’ve already mentioned this at some point, but this “Arrested Development” mini-reunion featuring Arnett, Cross and Mitchell Hurwitz premieres on September 21st. (Cross isn’t in this clip but will be in the series.) This series features Arnett as a rich guy attempting to win Keri Russell’s heart. Not a stretch, right?
  • “Todd Margaret”: David Cross’ joint In case you want to see David Cross in the kind of front-and-center role that Tobias Funkë always deserved, here you go. This is headed to IFC in October, and the premise is promising in a “Mr. Show” kind of way. Let’s hope it’s not forgotten and quietly canceled, like the excellent and lamented “Party Down.”
