Politics: Why to be careful when blocking judicial nominations

  • cause Back in May, Goodwin Liu’s nomination to the 9th Circuit Court was blocked by Republicans, due in part to his support for same-sex marriage.
  • effect Liu is now on track to be seated on the California Supreme Court instead–and will likely be confirmed in time to hear the case to repeal Proposition 8. source
  • » One note: Goodwin Liu has publicly opposed Proposition 8 in the past, so if he ends up hearing the case, supporters of the law will likely ask that he recuse himself. But that doesn’t mean he has to.

Politics: Forecasting model with perfect record predicts Obama reelection

  • In 1981, a professor at American University developed a forecasting model for presidential elections. Based on thirteen different metrics, or “keys,” the model has never been wrong. In 1992, it spotted George H.W. Bush’s vulnerability when everybody assumed he was invincible; that prediction was instrumental in convincing Bill Clinton to enter the race. Which is to say, were it not for Allan Lichtman and his “Thirteen Keys,” we may have never had a President Clinton. Now, Lichtman has applied his model to 2012. Here’s how Obama stacks up:
  • Reelection Working in the president’s favor are his significant domestic policy accomplishments, a lack of scandals, a weak Republican field, generally successful foreign policy, no significant third party candidates, no primary challenger and a lack of sustained social unrest.
  • Defeat So why might Obama have reason to worry? Well, the long-term economy, a lack of personal charisma, the results of the last House election and, if it comes to fruition, an upcoming recession could all spell trouble for his reelection campaign.
  • » Conclusion: “Even if I am being conservative, I don’t see how Obama can lose,” Lichtman says. The President wins 9 out of the 13 keys, two more than needed. Now, there’s lots of room for debate here–for example, is it really true that Obama lacks personal charisma? Lichtman’s rationale here is that the president has “lost his ability to connect since the 2008 election,” but that’s debatable. And do we know for certain that Rick Perry won’t prove to be a dazzling candidate, charming voters across the nation? Furthermore, a lot can happen between now and 2012: a surprise rebound of the economy, an unforeseen international crisis, or some other black swan event. But as it stands, this metric is some of the best reelection news Obama’s had in months. (Photo: Reuters/Jim Young). source

Tech: Get this: Hewlett-Packard making more Touchpads to keep up with demand

  • The speed at which it disappeared from inventory has been stunning. We have decided to produce one last run of TouchPads to meet unfulfilled demand.
  • A statement from Hewlett-Packard • Revealing that the company’s late-round success with the HP TouchPad was enough that they’re going to produce more of them and sell them at fire-sale prices. Which is hilarious, and tells us all that the decision to stop selling them was perhaps a little too rash. Good work, HP! source

World: Yoshihiko Noda is the new Prime Minister of Japan

  • He’s a compromise candidate. He doesn’t have his own independent power base. And he’s not a particularly strong communicator. He’s not a populist at all. He’s sort of a typical throwback to the Japanese prime minister of yore, the faceless grey suits. Even in Japan his name recognition factor is quite low.
  • Jeffrey Kingston, director of Asian Studies at Temple U’s Japanese campus • Giving a not-so-enthralled take on the new Prime Minister of Japan, Yoshihiko Noda. This article states that Noda, a former finance minister, acknowledged during his campaign that “he was no goldfish, but rather an unattractive loach, a bottom-feeding fish.” We’re endlessly curious how it would be received stateside if Mitt Romney proclaimed his similarity to an ugly, bottom-feeding fish. source

World: Libyan leader issues ultimatum to Gaddafi loyalists

  • 4 day deadline for Gaddafi forces to surrender, Libyan leader says source
  • » An ultimatum backed by force: Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the head of Libya’s interim council, issued a deadline to all forces still loyal to the now-hiding Muammar Gaddafi — give up and surrender all remaining control, or else “we will decide this matter militarily.” He emphasized that he doesn’t wish to do this, but doesn’t feel the council can afford to wWith all the work Libya has in front of it, the idea that such things could be put off to acommodate further bloodshed is troubling. Here’s hoping for a clean, civil laying down of arms.

U.S.: “Fast and Furious” investigation forces reassignment of ATF chief Kenneth Melson

  • cause The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms ran a gun trafficking sting in 2009 called “Operation Fast and Furious.” They allowed about 2000 illegal guns into Mexico, trying to build a bigger case against high-level buyers. The 2010 death of a border patrol agent sparked attention, and the plan was ended.
  • effect The House Oversight Committee has found only about 600 guns have been recovered, and heard testimony from a former agent who claims the ATF knew the same guns were being found at crime scenes in the U.S. and Mexico. Bureau head Kenneth Melson was consequently reassigned today. source

U.S.: Hurricane Irene, Joplin tornado run into wall of tightly-funded political reality

  • Any projects that have not come in for approval, we’re not going to be able to fund those as this point. We’re going to postpone those. Our goal is to keep this disruption as short as possible, but it was prudent.
  • FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate • Describing the reasons that FEMA is putting their long-term work to repair Joplin, Mo. on hold, and instead putting that money towards Hurricane Irene. Another issue arising in the Hurricane Irene situation? They might run into yet another wall of House Republican suck. That’s because House Majority Leader Eric Cantor makes no guarantees about funding Irene cleanup unless there are budget cuts to match, which is a real jerk move which shows how out-of-touch with reality that the GOP is. Now, granted, Ron Paul pitches ideas like these all the time. But when the GOP leadership continues to do so without regard to the current situation at hand, it makes you you want to vote all the bums out en masse next year. source
