Politics: Max Headroom: Looking ahead to Obama’s jumpstart plans

  • MCcain’s takeHaving saved himself from the brink of a tough primary, John McCain’s now got the economy and his party’s political future on his mind, both of which he talks about at length with Chris Wallace. He says that people have “lost confidence” in Obama’s economy-fixing skills.
  • Lindsey’s takeIn twelve seconds, Lindsey Graham (a far more moderate Republican than McCain, even) says what it take McCain to say in twelve minutes. Obama’s tone-deaf on a number of issues (including the economy), and that’s why Republicans are going to win big in November.
  • Alex Jones’ takeOh, who are we kidding? This is just a hilarious piece on that insane conspiracy theorist radio host whose videos are always on YouTube. Nightline did a piece on him, and it’s pretty effin’ hilarious. Nightline calls his work “paranoia porn.” That’s pretty spot-on.

Tech: Is the new iPod Nano simply begging to be an iWatch?

9To5Mac came up with this use of the new iPod Nano, and it certainly makes a lot more sense in this context, doesn’t it? source

Tech: Is the Craigslist “Adult Services” thing an elaborate PR stunt?

  • It certainly appears to be a statement about how they feel about being judged in the court of public opinion. It’s certainly the law that they’re not liable for it, but it’s another matter if the attorneys general are saying change your ways.
  • First Amendment lawyer Thomas R. Burke • Regarding the Craigslist “Adult Services” situation. It’s probably worth noting that Craigslist has thus far let the “Censored” bar speak for itself, suggesting that they’re trying to encourage discussion about what the whole situation means as a first-amendment discussion. Or as a safety net. Craigslist needs a little leverage. They’re getting savaged right now. source

U.S.: Craigslist’s “Adult Services” ads hiding in “Casual Encounters”

  • cause After years of pressure which recently hit a head, Craigslist finally got rid of its monitored, for-pay “Adult Services” section. They put a “censored” bar in its place.
  • reactionWith “Adult Services” out of service, users just moved over to the loosely-monitored “Casual Encounters” section. Great job, watchdogs. source
  • » To emphasize: Craigslist had to take down a service which provided tracking and monitoring of all purchases because regulators were concerned about what was on the site. Now, those users are going to go to other places, such as Backpage.com, which DO NOT provide the kind of tracking and paperwork that Craigslist did. Why is Craigslist getting crap here? Simple: Because they’re an easy target. This kind of stuff is going to happen anyway. Deal with the root problem, authorities.

Politics: Coming soon: More Obama stimulus efforts on the way

  • $100 billion in tax credits to encourage R&D source
  • » And that’s not all: Get ready for even more stimulus talk later this week; Obama plans to launch another major effort to kick-start the economy on Wednesday. The big question: Will he be able to pull it off given all the crap he’s had to take from the right lately? (In fact, it’s good to note that these efforts are relatively modest because of that.)

Tech: To those still stuck with the iPhone 3G: iOS 4.1 helps (a little)

  • Oh, the lowly iPhone 3G users. Many didn’t upgrade their phones to iOS4, or immediately regretted it, because the new version of the OS was such a dog as to render the phones unusable. Fortunately for those users, the upcoming iOS 4.1 update will help fix that problem, making the phone at least somewhat usable. Don’t expect any miracles, though: The iPhone 3G only has a quarter of the RAM of the iPhone 4 and half the RAM of the iPhone 3GS. And it also has a dog-slow processor, to boot. (We’re still rockin’ iPhone 3.0 on the 3G, just an FYI.) source

World: Fidel Castro uses the Internet enough for the rest of Cuba

  • 13% of Cuba has access to the internet, which is only accessible by expensive satellite access (that’s a lower average than Haiti, even!)
  • 200+ the number of news items Fidel Castro reports to read daily, which is kind of a lot; he’s obsessed with Wikileaks, too source

Politics: Protip: California’s Prop. 23 designed by big oil to block regulation

  • Live in California? You should read this. One of the propositions currently on the ballot for November is Proposition 23, an oil-company pushed piece of legislation that would prevent a landmark environmental bill from getting passed unless California had four straight quarters below 5.5 percent unemployment. This is a marker that the state has rarely hit over the last 35 years, and likely won’t for a long while due to the current unemployment levels, hovering above 12 percent. And big energy is backing it. Check it out:
  • bad The bill is backed by two of the biggest polluters in the state, oil-hawkers Valero and Tesoro.
  • worse The Koch brothers (remember them?) are pushing it financially with $1 million in help. source
