World: Not even MacGyver convinced by odd couple’s weird luggage

  • We don’t know yet if these two end up being bad guys or are just really strange people.
  • A U.S. official • Speaking about the detention of two people who had some really weird crap in their checked luggage on a flight from Chicago to Amsterdam. (They were detained by Dutch police after the end of the flight, by the way.) One dude had $7,000 in cash for no good reason. The other had a cell phone taped to a bottle of Pepto-Bismol (which isn’t a bomb, by the way), a bunch of cell phones taped together (also not a bomb) and a bunch of watches taped together (not a bomb, either). ABC News has reported that it appeared to be a dry run for a bombing attack, to check how secure the system was, but officials don’t know yet. Let’s hope they were just idiots who were holding a bottle of Pepto-Bismol for ransom. source

About: New writer at ShortFormBlog: Everybody welcome Seth Millstein

  • Hello, readers! My name is Seth, and I’m very excited to announce that I’ve joined the writing team here at ShortFormBlog. So … there it is! I’ve announced it! In keeping with the site’s theme, I’ll keep my introduction short. My previous writings can be found at The Daily Californian and my own blog, Shermanesque. I enjoy politics, cities, workplace shenanigans and 1940’s film-noir aesthetic. I hope you enjoy my presence here, and I’ll now return you to your regularly-scheduled program.

Tech: Thoughts on the Digg user revolt currently taking place

  • YES. DIGG SUCKS.
  • But not for the reason you think. It’s not because of its sudden change that it started sucking. It’s because it’s designed to encourage a minority of viewpoints, instead of the democratic thang that it sells itself as. It can be corrupted. It can be influenced. Fact of the matter is, Digg has never been about letting anyone have a voice. It’s structured in a way that makes it difficult for the small fry, whether they’re simply a small blog or an average user, to have any actual influence. At least with this redesign, Digg is being honest about it. The best part? They’ve actually made the site approachable to outsiders rather than the insular thing it had become. Instead of complaining about the changes, learn to accept them. Or go to Reddit. source

U.S.: CNN posts vaguest story in the history of journalism

  • A bunch of people were booted off a flight after “a comment” was made. What was the comment? Who said it? And why was it alarming enough that they had to be booted off a flight at Dulles International Airport? Why is this story the most read item on CNN.com right now? There’s like no information here and it says basically nothing at all. source

World: Vladimir Putin wants to be Russia’s president again in 2012

  • No, it interests me like … I wanted to say like everyone, but in fact more than everyone else. But I don’t want to make a fetish out of it.
  • Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin • Discussing making another presidential run in 2012. Heh heh, he said “fetish.” Putin would be able to stay in power a full six years if reelected. In other news, he had this to say about Democratic protesters without permits: “If you get (permission), you go and march. If you don’t – you have no right to. Go without permission, and you will be hit on the head with batons. That’s all there is to it.” Heh. source
