• Every day seems to bring more bad news about the size and scope of this crisis, and reversing that trend should be the president’s priority. The White House may view this oil spill as an opportunity to push its agenda in Washington, but Americans are more concerned about what it plans to do to solve the crisis at hand.
• Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell • Emphasizing that climate change that Obama anchored tonight’s address on didn’t actually do anything about the problem currently on the ground. Which, let’s admit it, is both true and what Mitch was going to say. We don’t disagree with him but think the issues aren’t so clear-cut. source

• Let’s face it. Obama’s good with discussing broad. But when it comes to specifics with the American people, he’s a little lacking. The truth of the matter is that there’s not really much new here. Pretty much the one thing that is new, or at least explained in better detail, is the BP escrow fund, which Obama had this to say about it: “This fund will not be controlled by BP. In order to ensure that all legitimate claims are paid out in a fair and timely manner, the account must and will be administered by an independent, third party.” source

• As protest songs go, the U2 hit has been very effective. One of the band’s earliest and most-well-known hits, the most affecting lyric in the entire song is “how long, how long must we sing this song … how long, how long …” Today, Bono and company got their answer, as Britain finally acknowledged that Bloody Sunday – a key conflict with Northern Ireland – was the fault of their government. • » What happened? During a civil rights march in Derry, Northern Ireland, soldiers that were part of the Parachute Regiment opened fire on a number of civilians. The British government  – which initially said in a discredited 1972 report that the victims were armed with weapons and bombs – has long been criticized for the incident, which led to years of conflict and disruption in the region.
• » Today’s findings: In a new analysis, the British government found that the civilians had done nothing wrong, were fired on first, didn’t have any weapons, and weren’t even provoking the soldiers before they fired. Representatives for the soldiers say many things were overlooked, but that hasn’t stopped David Cameron from offering an apology.
• » What happens next? Despite the long passage of time, the soldiers involved in the incident could still be prosecuted for murder or lying to the inquiry, giving the report some real bite.

Footnote: A lasting message

• That’s an incident, the most famous incident in Northern Ireland and it’s the strongest way of saying how long? How long do we have to put up with this? I don’t care who’s who – Catholics, Protestants, whatever. You know people are dying every single day through bitterness and hate, and we’re saying why? What’s the point?
• U2 drummer Larry Mullen • Pointing out in a 1983 interview that the message of the song isn’t just limited to Northern Ireland and the events of that day. “Let’s forget the politics, let’s stop shooting each other and sit around the table and talk about it,” he said. Say what you have to about U2, but they’ve certainly lived this message, no matter how rich Bono has gotten and how reflective his shades are. source

• This may be the saddest video ever. Touchdown Jesus, a large statue visible on I-75 in Monroe, Ohio, was destroyed by a lightning strike last night. Damage has been set at $700,000 – $300,000 for the statue itself and another $400,000 for damage to the ampitheater. Stupid acts of God, ruining great things. source

• Can we just say that this was the most neglected part of Apple’s entire lineup? Well, until today, that is. Apple redesigned the box to be used the way people actually use it – as a small, efficient server or as a beefed-up TV device, complete with all the necessary ports to make it a part of your living room. • Wow, this looks bad. John McCain went white during the hearing when questioning the general on Afghanistan. After a few minutes, Petraeus was feeling better, eating and drinking water. He apparently didn’t eat breakfast before the hearing. Still, an immensely harrowing clip. source

• yes South Carolina uses touch-screen voting devices. Rep. James Clyburn thinks that the 12,000 voting machines were hacked, leading to Alvin Greene’s victory, which candidate Vic Rawl is protesting.
