Politics: Max Headroom: If snow’s involved, it must be an anti-war protest

  • Fox News Fail For some reason, Fox News chose to report the snowball fight story (which we covered directly below) as an anti-war protest … when it clearly wasn’t. Those twentysomethings are gathering! They must be protesting war or something.

  • Voice of the left How’d he get on “Meet the Press”? Markos Moulitsas, a.k.a. the guy behind liberal blog Daily Kos, got to sit up at the table with the big boys and tell them why the health care plan sucks. Honestly, it’s pretty cool that he’s considered this influential.

  • Lindsey’s madSouth Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, on the other hand, got to go on about why he thinks the health care plan sucks for a different reason – Ben Nelson got a sweetheart deal that he thinks his state can benefit from. Does this GOP complaint have legs?

Politics: Obama’s got a buddy on the right with massive muscles

  • When it comes to effort,
[Obama] should get a straight A. He’s out there with tremendous energy and he’s selling his ideas. And he has great enthusiasm there. He’s a great speaker, a great  communicator.
  • California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger • Stretching his big, muscular arm across party lines in giving Obama a pat on the back for his first year in office. Schwarzenegger says that Obama has to “be tough, just continue on, never give up, eventually he’s going to get all those things done.” You know, like the Terminator does when he’s trying to save Sarah Connor. source

Culture: Avatar screwed by a massive winter storm. That must’ve hurt.

  • $73 million in box-office results – OK but not amazing results for the movie that’s gonna change life itself
  • 75% dip in movie sales in D.C. on Saturday – sorry, movie industry, we were ordering pizza in our apartment
  • 57% dip in movie sales in Philadelphia on Saturday; we’ve always seen Philly as a wannabe D.C. source

Culture: Brittany Murphy draws somber reaction from her “Clueless” co-star

  • I always felt connected to her as we shared a very special experience in our lives together. I feel love in my heart for her—and hope she is at peace. This is truly sad.
  • “Clueless” star Alicia Silverstone • On the death of her former co-star, Brittany Murphy. Murphy, who died this morning at 32, was perhaps not an A-lister, but she was definitely a A-minus-lister, showing up in “Clueless,” “8 Mile,” “Girl, Interrupted,” “Sin City,” and over 200 episodes of “King of the Hill” (she was LuAnne). Silverstone, who admits to losing touch with the girl she made over in the movies, said she “was so talented, so warm, and so sweet.” The ones who die young are the ones that hurt most – and Murphy’s death was nothing short of shocking on that specific level. source

Offbeat: Ben & Arthur: The worst film we’ve ever seen. God, it’s bad.

  • Next time you watch a film and claim it’s the worst ever, don’t forget “Ben & Arthur.” Shot on an almost nonexistent budget with actors who have nonexistent acting abilities, this piece of gay-themed cinema (which, by the way, plays the “gay” card a bit too heavyhandedly and in hilarious ways) holds a spot in the Top 10 of IMDB’s Bottom 100 – and deservedly so. Sam Mraovich, the director and main actor, is largely at fault for the awfulness. Fortunately, it’s the kind of awful you can laugh at. So laugh, guys, laugh. source

Biz: Saab dead, then Saab not dead, then Saab dead, then Saab not dead

  • The Swedish automaker has another lease on life. After GM announced that the company would be closed last week after talks with potential suitor Spyker fell through, Spyker said “not so fast” and submitted another deal. “Despite our collective 11th-hour set-back, we are returning to the table with a renewed offer,” said Spyker Chief Executive Victor Muller. Saab’s 3,400 employees must be pleased that they’re being taken on such a comfortable merry-go-round. source
