Tech, U.S.: Free speech trumps hate speech for Google In Michelle Obama case

  • Although Google reserves the right to address such requests individually, Google views the integrity of our search results as an extremely important priority. Accordingly, we do not remove a page from our search results simply because its content is unpopular or because we receive complaints concerning it.
  • A message from Google • Describing their decision to keep a now-removed racist image of Michelle Obama on the site. It wasn’t for reasons of racism, but rather the integrity of the results. The image, which grotesquely portrayed Obama as a monkey, has since been removed by its Chinese owner, who apologized for putting it online, as well as the controversy it caused. source

U.S.: Remember that strange census worker hanging? It was a suicide

  • At least that’s what authorities are saying about the death of William E. Sparkman. Back in September, Sparkman was found dead in rural Kentucky. The crime was especially bizarre – he was hung and his body had the word “Fed” scrawled on it. Authorities now say that the case wasn’t a hate crime but a staged suicide in an attempt to earn a life insurance payout. Well, at least he wasn’t mauled by dogs like one unlucky Indiana census worker a few years back. source

U.S.: Obama has to make a big decision. Time for a speech!

  • After eight years, some of those years in which we did not have, I think, either the resources or the strategy to get the job done, it is my intention to finish the job.
  • President Barack Obama • On his Afghan troop announcement, which many expect him to make during a live television address Tuesday – just around the point you should be making Turkey (or Tofurky) soup out of your leftovers. As with seemingly everything in his presidency, he’s either going to piss off his base or piss off the right with his decision. We hope he does the right thing and figures out a way to piss off both sides. Now that would be awesomely presidential of him. source
