U.S.: Gavin Newsom: Not the next governor of California. By choice.

  • With a young family and responsibilities at City Hall, I have found it impossible to commit the time required to complete this effort the way it needs to – and should be – done.
  • San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom • Describing his reasons for no longer running for governor of California. It was a sudden drop-out, one precipitated by Attorney General Jerry Brown’s staggering lead over him in the Democratic primary. The center-leaning Newsom tried really hard to replicate Obama’s social-networking success but couldn’t pull it off. Too bad. Seems like he would’ve been a good governor based on his success in the Bay Area. • source

Politics: Alan Grayson looks cowardly when he’s smoked out by Fox News

  • Alan Grayson talks a good game, but he can’t be bothered to take on the people his comments piss off the most. Griff Jenkins, the kind of guy who wears hipster shades unironically, spent a lot of time staking out the liberal Florida representative, who was going out of his way not to give Fox the time of day. In a way, this is kind of what the Obama administration is doing. Except Grayson, as a first-time congressman, doesn’t have any real power in Congress – just a few memorable Republican-bashing statements. Stop hiding, Alan. source

Politics: Ron Paul talks more of his crazy mumbo-jumbo

  • While I would like nothing more than to see the Federal Reserve abolished, it is not absolutely necessary to do so with direct legislation.
  • Ron Paul • In a column on CNN where he argues that more transparency – and less spending – is needed at the Federal Reserve. But it’s all veiled – he would rather the Fed go away entirely. The uber-libertarian 2008 presidential candidate, last seen in Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Bruno” trying to fend off a gay guy, recently released a book, “Going Rogue”End the Fed,” arguing just that. We tried to continue reading what Paul was saying, but it made our brains hurt. • source

Tech, World: The odds of tripping on a Russian porn site just got much lower

  • That’s because sites can now go beyond the English character set in URLs. Since top-level domains became a thing, they’ve been limited for users outside of the U.S. due to the fact that only the Latin character set is supported. Until now. ICANN is fast-tracking a new solution which allows extended character sets to be used. However, due to the fact that it needs to be compatible with the current URL structure, it’s a bit complicated and likely to break due to the technical hoops needed. Но погодите, доменные имена на русском языке! source

Tech: CNN tries to pass off social networking defriending as news

  • She sent an e-mail saying, ‘I only connect with people I know, and hopefully our paths will cross one day,’ I read that, and I said, ‘Oh, my God, I’ve been rejected.’
  • LinkedIn user Elaine Fogel • Describing the emotional roller coaster she went through after a smart 40-something woman declined the chance to connect with THE STAR, THE LEGEND, ELAINE FOGEL!!!!!!!!! Fogel has 500 connections on LinkedIn, and to make up for that, we’re going to connect with her. It’s a bit of stunt-casting, we know, but we feel that we could easily be just as good of a business colleague to Ms. Fogel as that unnamed woman. And considering the emotional response defriending causes, it might make her feel better. I know it would make us feel better. • source
