World: Another New York Times reporter kidnapped, rescued in Afghanistan

  • His translator didn’t make it though. Stephen Farrell is a lucky man. Farrell, a reporter for the New York Times since 2007, is now the second reporter in three months to have been rescued after being kidnapped by the Taliban in Afghanistan. He didn’t have to wait as long as David Rohde for a rescue (Rohde was in Taliban captivity for seven months; Farrell was kidnapped four days ago), but his rescue was far more violent. Sultan Munadi, his interpreter, was killed in the crossfire. source

Tech, U.S.: Barack Obama sez you should watch your back on Facebook

  • Well, let me give you some very practical tips. First of all, I want everybody here to be careful about what you post on Facebook, because in the YouTube age, whatever you do, it will be pulled up again later somewhere in your life.
  • President Barack Obama • Discussing the danger of posting your entire personal life on Facebook – because, as everyone with half a brain knows, that stuff comes back to haunt you like a child you had with a filmmaker you were working with. Or a bunch of AIM messages with a congressional page. Or a lewd bathroom encounter in a Minneapolis airport. Or a stash of money hidden in a freezer. We could go on, but you get the idea. • source

Culture: Our d-bag alarm goes off when Jon Gosselin’s name is mentioned

  • What a despicable human being. As you probably don’t know, we’ve spent the last few months largely avoiding the saga of the Jon and Kate Gosselin divorce, which has played out on “Jon and Kate Plus 8.” But we can’t anymore. Jon Gosselin has just doucheified himself so much that we have to say something. Dude was on ABC, saying that he can’t sit on a sofa with “someone right now that I despise.” You have eight kids with your wife. You probably shouldn’t be going out all the time, wearing Ed Hardy like you just got out of an Ibiza washing machine. You should be trying to make it work, bro. Did you hire Chris Brown’s PR team? source

U.S., World: Fast food in Iraq: Jared approves of this military operation

The crass, commercial amenities of retail followed the soldiers to Iraq, so minus the bombings, the bases kinda feel like home. Kinda. source

Politics: Obama’s speech was good, but public schools need improvement

  • You cannot fool all the people all the time, President Lincoln said. And when it comes to student learning, the public seems beyond deceit.
  • Wall Street Journal columnist Paul Peterson • Discussing the declining quality of public schools in the wake of Obama’s speech today. He says it’s beyond terrible – graduation rates are lower than they were in 1970, when Kevin Arnold from “The Wonder Years” started at McKinley High. Not only are parents unhappy with education, but they don’t want to spend any more money on schools. 46% don’t support spending more. To give you an idea about how anemic that number is, in 1990 (when Zack Morris was a sophomore at Bayside High), the number was 70%, and last year (when the cast of High School Musical was filled with seniors) that number was 61%. Depressing. • source

Politics: Remember that Glenn Beck attack site? The lawyers got it

  • “Glenn Beck Raped And Murdered A Young Girl In 1990 (dot com)” was nailed. Hard. Last week’s hilariously blatant slander golden boy, GlennBeckRapedAndMurderedAYoungGirlIn1990.com, was taken down in an attack by lawyers on both its host, data center and registar. However, the site bounced back in alternate form: GB1990.com. In other news, Fark’s Drew Curtis took Keith Olbermann to task for his criticism of the attacks, which are a parody of Glenn Beck’s own tactics. source
