Music: Attack Attack!’s “Stick Stickly” video so bad, the Guardian dissected it

  • We were totally ahead of the game here. Back in mid-June, we saw the worst music video ever, an unspeakably bad concoction of gyration, cliché, screaming and in-unison headbanging called “Stick Stickly” by screamo band Attack Attack! It was so bad we posted about it twice. Well, we caught the trend just before that bastion of high culture, The Guardian, got a hold of it. And they dissected it in profound detail. Our favorite description of the band: “Like a set of dancers representing Undead versions of Jonas brothers on a Halloween-Pride parade.” source

Tech, U.S.: That DOS attack may not have come from North Korea after all

  • This is not something that your average ‘script kitty’ can do. On the other hand it doesn’t require it to be state-sponsored.
  • Security expert Mark Rasch • Who’s currently of SecureITExperts and led the Department of Justice’s computer crimes unit during the George H.W. Bush administration. Rasch raised doubts over whether it was a definite slam dunk that these attacks, which hit major financial, government and media sites in the U.S., came from a North Korean source. At this time, we’d like to point your attention to this Wired article from back in the day about the Estonian denial of service attacks. This graphic in particular provides some good explanation about what’s happening now. • source

U.S.: Mount Rushmore needed a change, so some activists added Obama

Unfortunately, Obama isn’t made of stone. He’s made of some banner material – the kind that gets 11 people arrested for trespassing. source

Offbeat, World: “Kim Jong Ale” shows us the softer side of propaganda

  • Apparently North Korea isn’t all about making plans to rule the world. A new ad run on state television (with predictably *awesome* graphics) promotes beer drinking, saying it gives you good health and contains protein. Now that’s something we could totally get behind. source

Tech: Google doesn’t need an OS for the PC, ’cause it already has one

  • Last night, Google surprised the tech-hungry masses just getting to bed by announcing that they are going to release a new operating system called Chrome OS designed to work with Netbooks and PCs and compete with Microsoft. source
  • Strangely enough, just the day before, an open-source group released version 0.2 of Live-Android, which just happens to be a version of Google’s mobile OS designed to boot on x86 PCs. Wait, you mean they have two OSes for PCs now? source

Employee discount here we come! source

World: Drive farther, shower longer, waste, waste and waste some more.

  • Wait, what? A new article in Orion Magazine (an environmental publication of sorts) by Derrick Jensen urges readers to not worry so much about personal consumption – it only accounts for a teeny percent of all waste and emissions anyway. source

  • Wait, why? Jensen argues that capitalism (that b*itch!) has made us define ourselves as consumers, not citizens. Instead of demanding political change, we think the best way to fight climate change is “buying green” or driving less. source

  • So what? Jensen makes a sound yet (judging by the hoards of comments) controversial bid to save the environment the good ol’ fashioned way – by causing a fuss and holding those with the “real power” accountable. source
