U.S.: As the world of Mark Sanford turns: He’s staying in office, brahs!

  • Resign? Pssh, whatever! Mark Sanford was back to work on Friday, apologizing to his cabinet (and his Lt. Governor, Andre Bauer) for his transgressions and recommitting to the job he was elected to do: Be governor of South Carolina. Sanford has Bauer’s full support, by the way. source

  • Calling him out Sanford will spend the next 18 months fending off comments like this one from State Rep. J. Todd Rutherford (D): “It is a problem when the CEO of a 4.5 million-person organization goes AWOL and nobody can reach him. It was a gross dereliction of duty.” source

  • Oh, I’ll pay for that He did have one ethics-bending mix of business and pleasure: He went on a business trip to Argentina last year, and e-mails show that he met with his mistress during the trip. He’s agreed to pay $9,000 for the trip, even though he actually did work. source

Offbeat: The Onion tweaks Twitter’s usefulness pitch-perfectly

  • Twitter was intended to be a way for vacant, self-absorbed egotists to share their most banal and idiotic thoughts with anyone pathetic enough to read them.
  • “Twitter Creator Jack Dorsey” • In an Onion article satirizing the service, where “Dorsey” says he’s surprised anyone – especially those in Iran – managed to find Twitter useful. Yeah, we’re surprised too, which is why we use it all the time. • source

Biz, U.S.: Michigan begins its abusive relationship with General Motors anew

  • General Motors decides to make a car in Michigan again. You know the story: State hosts corporation, state becomes dependent on corporation, corporation decides to offsource most of its work, state goes into economic seizure, corporation goes bankrupt. Sounds sweet, doesn’t it? Well, Michigan – 14.5% unemployment and all – plans to go back to its mistress and let them make cars in Michigan again. The Spark, unlike most of GM’s recent hogs, is small and compact – and it’s gonna be made in Michigan. Maybe this could be the start of a brand new relationship where GM screws them over again. source

Culture, Tech: The Internet wasn’t ready for Michael Jackson’s death at all

  • Twitter’s traffic doubled in just a short period, and Jackson’s death nearly made Iran a forgotten memory on the site. Facebook had triple the traffic. source
  • The L.A. Times site, which was the first reputable source (sorry TMZ) to confirm his death, had over two million pageviews in just an hour. source
  • But most telling might be the long-running AOL Instant Messenger. They went down 40 minutes, and called the day “a seminal moment in Internet history.” source

Music: For sale: One used 1999 Volkswagen Passat. (Owned by Elliott Smith.)

  • As music superfans, whoa. Do you live in Austin? Do you have $4,000 lining your pockets? Looking to gain instant indie cred and help a good cause at the same time? Buy this car. It’s a little dinged up, but it used to be owned by our biggest obsession, Elliott Smith. His sister is selling it. If you buy it, you too can imagine what he was thinking when he was driving around coming up with songs like “Son of Sam” and “Twilight.” Plus, even better, the proceeds – 100% of them – go to the SIMS foundation, which helps musicians with mental health and addiction problems. Admit it, you want it. source

Griffin’s a tour de force, but he’s a class above just about everyone else in the draft. Which is why trades are where the real action’s happening. source
