Tech: The RIAA: The Viacom/YouTube decision is “bad public policy”

  • So says the group that sues suburban mothers for stealing two dozen songs. President Cary Sherman says that the ruling “will actually discourage service providers from taking steps to minimize the illegal exchange of copyrighted works on their sites.” To that, we say, make it easier to exchange content legally and you won’t have an issue. Fewer lawsuits (actually, wait, no lawsuits), more cool things like Lala and Rdio. source

  • Maybe it’s exploitation. Maybe it’s just good fortune. But this classic viral video helped David DeVore Jr. and his family make $150,000 in a year – most of it off of ads on the video’s YouTube page. Google’s happy after a judge sided with them in the long-running $1 billion lawsuit. Viacom plans to appeal. We appeal to them to put “The Daily Show” on YouTube again. source

Tech: YouTube adds video-editing, the final piece of its viral puzzle

  • The worst part of uploading video to YouTube wasn’t the uploading itself, but the editing. It took time to edit and forced you to use a separate interface and separate program. Cloud-friendly Google couldn’t just let this happen, right? So, now, they’ve finally added video-editing to the site, making it significantly more useful for regular users who want to take their Flip or iPhone 4 videos and throw them on the Web quickly. source

Music: M.I.A.’s prison is YouTube, based on her new album cover

  • Youtube just got the avant-garde treatment. MIA has pretty much always been the most out-there pop star in the best way possible, and the cover for her new album “/\/\ /\ Y /\” (that’s “Maya,” for the non-hipsters) looks like it’s going to keep up that trend, putting her behind a wall of Youtube players. See the symbolism? source

Tech: For some companies, IE6 is like a “get out of Facebook free” card

  • what Some companies have chosen to stick with IE6 essentially because sites like Facebook and YouTube aren’t really usable with it anymore. Which is annoying as sin.

Politics: Additional comments on “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day!”

  • It’s a noble cause, but right now it feels like trolling. Look, we think free speech is great and want to encourage it, but this whole controversy feels like an excuse not to defuse a free speech issue, but to amplify it. In that NYT article we just posted, there was a quote from Twitter which sort of said it all. “One day,” the user said, “they will ban breathing in Pakistan.” You want to promote free speech? Fight for this guy, who just wants to watch a clip of a dog riding a skateboard. Don’t fight against him. Enable him. People like him will eventually encourage the cause you’re fighting for if you help him out. source

Politics: Max Headroom: Meet the kind of guy who posts news videos all day

  • This bearded dude may not look like much, but he’s kind of a big deal. This guy runs a YouTube channel called MoxNews.com, which has posted hundreds of political videos like the kind we post here every week. He’s a bit of an obsessive about it (and argues the world might end after 2012), but he finds some really great news content. (And he needs money. You should donate.) The guy who ran the similar NewsPolitics YouTube channel got a job as a video editor for the excellent Mediaite and has turned that site into a huge hit. Why shouldn’t this guy get hooked up by Dan Abrams too? Just sayin’. Here are some recent clips from Mr. MoxNews’ YouTube channel.

  • Can Jesus be funnY? This priest on “Fox and Friends” seems offended by the idea that one can make fun of Jesus Christ, as Comedy Central is currently planning. He hurts his cause by suggesting a funny comedy couldn’t be made about presidential infidelity. Did this dude forget the Clinton years?
  • Oops, wrong guy!This MoxNews clip of a Seattle beating drew nearly 50,000 views in just two days. In the clip, police officers hold a man who was possibly a suspect in an armed robbery. Before they even know if he’s their guy, officers kick and stomp on him, injuring him. By the way, he wasn’t their guy.
  • Ron paul: I called it! The congressman and 2008 presidential candidate has been going on and on for years about overspending and too much debt causing the downfall of the world, so guess who Fox News called when they needed to talk to somebody about the Greece debt crisis? That’s right, Ron Paul.
