World: A few key facts revealed in Wikileaks’ latest document leak

  • 15k the number of new civilian casualties Iraqi Body Count added to their list in the wake of Wikileaks’ latest data dump – the total number is over 122,000
  • 680 Iraqis were killed in often-violent “escalation of force” encounters near military checkpoints; some victims included pregnant women and the mentally ill
  • 80% the share of civilian deaths in the overall death count, according to Iraq Body Count – around 150,000 deaths, including over 3,000 by friendly fire
  • » Did the U.S. hide torture? The most controversial fact revealed in the reports, barring the release of the reports themselves, appears to be the U.S. military’s complicit role in hiding torture. It’s something that UN representative Manfred Nowak is straight-up calling out the Obama administration for. “There is an obligation,” he said. “to investigate whenever there are credible allegations torture has happened – and these allegations are more than credible – and then it is up to the courts on the one hand to bring the perpetrators to justice and also on the other hand to provide the victims with adequate reparation for the harm they have suffered.” Other human rights groups have pinpointed the British government for similar reasons.

World: Julian Assange: Wikileaks leader’s quirks add to his work’s appeal

  • They called me the James Bond of journalism. It got me a lot of fans, and some of them ended up causing me a bit of trouble.
  • Wikileaks founder Julian Assange • Making a pretty frank admission about his whole legal situation in Sweden, where he’s wanted on rape and molestation charges. Assange brought an even larger set of documents to the public eye Friday, revealing 391,832 secret documents yesterday, a leak more than five times as large as the recent Afghan War documents leak, which led to Bradley Manning’s detainment. Regarding Manning, who Assange has been matter-of-fact about in the past, he had something much weightier to say: “We have a duty to assist Mr. Manning and other people who are facing legal and other consequences.” Assange is a complex figure, perhaps one of the most interesting news figures around. And in his own weird way, he’s an essential part of the news right now. Even if some of his styles are questionable, some of the best journalism comes from these experimental methods. Ten years from now, Christian Bale should be all over this role. source

World: Fidel Castro uses the Internet enough for the rest of Cuba

  • 13% of Cuba has access to the internet, which is only accessible by expensive satellite access (that’s a lower average than Haiti, even!)
  • 200+ the number of news items Fidel Castro reports to read daily, which is kind of a lot; he’s obsessed with Wikileaks, too source

Politics: Julian Assange: A yo-yo in the Swedish legal system

  • The rape investigation against Assange? Back on. Wikileaks has had a bit of trouble in the past two weeks with this whole Julian Assange thing. As more details have leaked to the press, it’s become clear that there may be something there, though many supporters will debate that fact. But why push rape charges, unpush them and then push them again? It just leads to inconsistency and damages the case in the public eye. source

World: Swedish nuclear bunker seems like a fitting home for Wikileaks

  • Their servers are going to live like kings. This lair, 98 feet down within the Pionen White Mountains in Sweden, will be holding some of the Wikileaks servers, which need a cool spot to hide from evil governments. You don’t get much cooler than a nuclear bunker that looks like it was designed by Ikea on the weekends. (By the way, they won’t be alone: The space also doubles as a home for colocation provider Banhof.) source

Politics: Fidel Castro convinced Osama bin Laden is a U.S. spy

  • Who showed that he [Bin Laden] is indeed a CIA agent was WikiLeaks. It proved it with documents.
  • Former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro • Saying some crazy crap about Osama bin Laden, the CIA, George W. Bush and Wikileaks. We wish we could add more to this, but we simply can’t. It’s just too crazy. source

World: Wikileaks has the CIA freaked out again over new leak

  • These sorts of analytic products – clearly identified as coming from the Agency’s ‘Red Cell’ – are designed simply to provoke thought and present different points of view.
  • CIA spokeswoman Marie Harf • Trying to play down the importance of Wikileaks’ latest leak, “What If Foreigners See the United States as an ‘Exporter of Terrorism’?,” a three-page 2001 classified document  from the CIA which sounds like a barnburner of a read.  It’s no Afghan War data dump or anything, but it does cover something about Baruch Goldstein, a U.S. citizen who moved to Israel and set off a bomb that started a trend of car bombings. That’s something, we guess. source

World: Wikileaks sex case: Did Julian Assange simply start getting creepy?

  • It is quite wrong that we were afraid of him. He is not violent and I do not feel threatened by him. The responsibility for what happened to me and the other girl lies with a man who had attitude problems with women.
  • One of Julian Assange’s anonymous accusers • Regarding the situation that led to the quickly-rescinded rape charges against the Wikileaks founder. The Guardian cites sources close to one of the women that claim the issue cropped up because Assange disagreed about condom use with the women, not because he was acting in a non-consensual manner. Gawker has named one of the women, but we won’t do the same here. That said, if that’s what happened (instead of a conspiracy, as Wikileaks has claimed), that’s pretty creepy. source
