U.S.: There’s some giant factory exploding in the neighborhood

  • Pretty scary, right? This morning near Seabrook, Texas, an American Acryl plant just went kablooey – causing a big explosion, billowing large amounts of smoke in the air and aftershocks as far as 10 miles away. The crazy part? Just two people were hurt, and they were already released. It’s no Three Mile Island, but it is a pretty huge “Holy Crap!” (Hat tip goes to reader Decapod; thanks man!) source

Biz: The decline in unemployment, tempered by a depressing cartoon

  • Dear Mint.com: Thanks for accurately depressing the heck out of us. It’s a good explanation as to why the 10% unemployment rate sounds good, but is really not telling the whole story. We hope they didn’t create this whole thing today. Click the link to see the corresponding graphic. Whoever does their graphics is awesome, BTW. source

Offbeat: Cat people and dog people: Read this post. OK?

  • For cat people Remember ninja cat? Well, this is just like it, and it’s begging you to watch. So watch.

  • For cat people Remember ninja cat? Well, this is just like it, and it’s begging you to watch. So watch.

  • For dog people This dog freaks the )&@) out after its owner, a soldier, returns home. It’s heartwarming.

U.S.: Saddest story of the day: Deer escapes lions at National Zoo, still dies

  • This story isn’t nearly as scary as the woman who got bitten by a polar bear after jumping in the water, but in a lot of ways, it’s more dramatic and sad. This deer accidentally found itself in the lion enclosure at the National Zoo in D.C. and had a heck of a time getting away (as the video above attests). It succeeded eventually, but died anyway due to injuries it sustained in the escape. :(source

U.S.: Major Nidal Malik Hasan: He didn’t seem different that morning

  • Here’s a video from yesterday morning of Major Nidal Malik Hasan. What’s interesting is that the store owner claims that he gave no sign of what was about to happen on the base. He was a regular customer but didn’t seem particularly violent or dangerous. He did, however, express major amounts of concern about his forthcoming deployment.source

Offbeat: Oh no! Douchebags are “taking back” the word!

  • What a bunch of douchebags. They claim they’re fresh, however, but this makes us want to come up with a new word to scorn them. What a bunch of santorum.source

Culture: Ricardo Autobahn takes the Girl Talk mashup concept to a new level

  • Here’s a fun game: Watch this music video – built from clips from TV shows and movies – and spend hours figuring out what pop culture clips this clever bastard (who goes by Ricardo Autobahn) used. It’s like Girl Talk for movies, except significantly more cerebral. source

Biz: Retrospect, my name is Bank of America: A not-classic U2 rewrite

  • Did this disappoint you, or leave a bad taste in your mouth? You know, this video seemed out of place a few years ago, when it first became popular, when Bank of America was still riding high. Now, with the company still paying back TARP funds, living down its unpopular purchase of Merrill Lynch and famously charging absurd fees, it’s just sick. Ethan Chandler of Bank of America took U2’s message of comradery and twisted it into a message of greed. Way to miss the point.source

Sports: This fuzzy guy right here is the greatest baseball player ever

Not a lot of movies exist of Babe Ruth, the greatest of the greats in an era before digital cameras. This is the ONLY one that exists of him playing in the outfield. source

Music: Two things we really like, together: Deerhunter and John Norris

  • Noisevox has been submitting stuff about their interviews for a little while now, and we haven’t really found the right one that fit with the site. But we admit it – we’re big Deerhunter fans (we also would like to big-up Atlas Sound too), and the interview itself is really intriguing. John Norris reportedly got laid off from MTV last year, so it’s great to see him doing what he does best elsewhere.source
