Tech: A hat tip to our friends at Apture, and their latest upgrade

  • As might be clear to the people who regularly use ShortFormBlog, we’re big fans of the Apture contextualization technology, and we’ve actually been testing out the newest version on the site for months. However, and this is big news, they’ve launched a public beta, with some significant(ly awesome) changes. You might notice that the bar on the bottom of the site has been replaced with a branded pop-up bar on the top with really cool social functions at your fingertips. They’re really excited about it (and have some awesome ideas about context), and so are we.

Tech: Apple releases Aperture 3, photographers collectively freak out

  • Sure, it’s a product Steve Jobs doesn’t show off, but it doesn’t mean people still aren’t excited. The photo-editing tool, which is available as a free trial, reportedly has 200 enhancements big and small. It also hasn’t been updated in a couple of years. So it’s due. source

U.S.: iPad: Some Tablet thing got everyone worked up today

  • On the scale of one to awesome, the iPad is pretty cool. The $499 starting price is reasonable, as is the data plan. The high-end of the scale is admittedly pretty high, but it is just a giant iPod Touch. Let’s not kid ourselves. But really, isn’t that what we wanted? source

Culture: My, CNN, what a beautiful redesign you have. We love it.

CNN redesign
  • Could one make love to a redesign? Especially one of a news site that seems to go tabloidy more than it should? If so, we’d totally make love to the CNN redesign. It’s big and bold and red. Just like us. source

Tech: Despite this awful video, Windows 7 seamlessly launching today

  • A month ago, this video put Microsoft in danger of (again) not looking like they were with it when it came to Windows 7, especially after the Vista debacle. Fortunately for Microsoft, it appears they won’t have another repeat of Windows Vista on their hands. Unfortunately, nobody thought to make a video like this to explain how simple it is to upgrade from Windows XP. source

Tech: Regarding Google Chrome Frame, Microsoft lays a line of BS

  • It doesn’t even matter what they say after this half-quote: “Given the security issues with plugins in general and Google Chrome in particular…” everybody should download Google Chrome Frame now? Is that what you’re gonna tell us, Microsoft spokesperson, about the plugin that Google made to make Web developers’ lives easier because you made a sucky browser called Internet Explorer 6? OHHHHHHHH NO. “… Google Chrome Frame running as a plugin has doubled the attach area for malware and malicious scripts. This is not a risk we would recommend our friends and families take.” Shut up, Microsoft. You’re just fearmongering. source
