World: Egypt’s situation completely screwed up beyond disrepair today

  • To be clear, a lot is happening in Egypt right now. It’s a giant mess, really. Nobel Peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei is reportedly under house arrest, media outlets are getting attacked, security forces are attacking protesters, the internet’s OFF … pretty much every bad thing that could happen in a revolution is happening today. It’s very much a “where-do-we-start”-type of situation. There is no central point. It’s a lot of bad, everywhere. We’ll try our best to keep an eye on all this today. Tech: Apple’s Magic Trackpad: For desktop users feeling left out

This wasn’t TOTALLY unexpected. In fact, the rumor mill had been suggesting this very idea for months – a trackpad for desktops. Neat. (Oh, iMacs also got a refresh.) source

Politics: Max Headroom: We just played “We Didn’t Start the Fire” backwards

  • Thad Allen just scared usWant to feel something hit the pit of your stomach? Watch this clip, where Thad “this oil spill needs a hero” Allen says in very plain terms that the spill is going to be with us well into the fall. Let’s hope a hurricane doesn’t plow through in the meantime. *fingers crossed*

  • Obama the GOP’s “Enemy”? On “Fox News Sunday,” Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who has a reasonable beef with Obama over the response to the oil spill, compared him to a Napoleon quote about watching your enemy self-destruct. The key phrase there is not “self-destruct.” It’s “enemy.”

  • He only wrote the lyricsWhether or not the news cycle has just gotten faster or what, comedian Bruce Fine was able to take Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire” and focus it on everything that’s happened during the Obama administration. The Joel version covered 50 years. Whoa.

Tech: Kevin Rose’s new Digg: A lot of ingredients in one little feed

  • Kevin Rose just combined Digg with Facebook and Twitter. As you may know, we think that Digg has a relevance problem. It also has an over-influence problem. And a sexism problem. And let’s face it, it’s kind of a pain in the butt to submit articles to. Fortunately for Digg, it has a coming redesign that looks pretty awesome.
  • Fixing the faults Digg had a lot of problems and this update has turned it into a viable source that we might actually use. It’s also way ahead of Twitter and Facebook in the way it handles RSS feeds. (Making it easier for content to gain influence organically, just like Twitter.) The mix of news, friends and tastemakers is kinda brilliant.
  • Reddit’s co-founder just jealousOne of the co-founders of Reddit has posted about it, and has trashed it as a crass move to please venture capitalists, but we completely disagree. And, if we’re being completely frank, Reddit still has these problems and always will as long as it treats content promotion from legitimate sites like spam. source

Tech: Microsoft screwed over Firefox users with a sneaky update

  • While the vulnerability is in an IE component, there is an attack vector for Firefox users as well. The reason is that .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installs a ‘Windows Presentation Foundation’ plug-in in Firefox.
  • Microsoft engineers on the company’s Security Research & Defense blog • Describing how a vulnerability which would usually only affect Internet Explorer users also affects IE users, too. The reason? Well, some genius thought it’d be awesome to stealthy foist a Microsoft-centric feature onto Firefox users without them asking – essentially bringing Firefox’s security quality down to the same level as IE. Way to go knuckleheads. • source
