Tech: Here’s a big social media graphic for you kids to chew on

MySpace is dipping big time, Facebook is growing super-fast, and so is Twitter, except Twitter is still closer to the bottom than the top. source

Sports: The NBA doesn’t want to be seen as the heavy on Twitter

  • David Stern sounds willing to find common ground. The NBA commissioner mentioned that the league was considering a Twitter policy akin to the NFL’s, but that it would be considerate of the players’ rights. The league has done a fairly good job of using the service so far, as they have over one million followers, and boast one of its most famous (and arguably best) users in Shaq. Don’t screw it up, guys. source

Sports, Tech: The NFL put in a bunch of stupid rules against social media

  • Players (or team officials) can’t tweet (nor can surrogate tweet for them) during the game, nor 90 minutes before or after. The surrogate part is the Ochocinco rule. source
  • They can only use social media to update once a quarter, so as not to usurp play-by-play mechanisms media outlets pay the NFL a lot of money for. source
  • Fans can tweet to their heart’s content based on current rules. Which means you have a leg up on NBC News if you go to a Redskins game with a cell phone. source

Culture: We saw this Paula Abdul “Idol” story last night, but we didn’t care

  • What I want to say most, is how much I appreciate the undying support and enormous love that you have showered upon me.
  • “American Idol” judge Paula Abdul • On her Twitter account last night, revealing to the world that she was leaving American Idol. As her banter between Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson has been downright essential to the show’s success, fans are obviously freaking out over this news. MTV’s going through the seven stages, themselves. • source

Sports, Tech: So begins the love affair between the NFL, its fans and Twitter

  • Had a six inch Sub for lunch and now I’m headed back to practice number 2. Ugh
  • Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley • Wrote on Twitter during the first day of training camp. NFL players (and fans) are slowly starting to fall in love with the micro-blogging site, but execs and handlers aren’t really sure what to make of it yet. Some think it’s a killer marketing tool and a great way for people to get to know the person behind the helmet, while others are freakin’ out because there’s not much control you can have over it. Well, yeah…that’s kinda the point.  • source

Biz: Oh, the neverending love affair between advertisers and social media

  • How can it be wrong if it feels so good? Marketing companies are realizing more and more that when it comes to selling products, a blogger’s seal of approval can go a long way. The devil is in the details though. How exactly do they get their hands on the product in the first place? The Federal Trade Commission wants to know, and might make it mandatory for online media publishing testimonials and reviews to disclose how they got the goods. source

Biz, Tech: We want you to retweet this, but you won’t ’cause it’s self-referential

  • What the frack? It’s true. We want you to talk about us, but a recent set of statistics gathered by internet smart guy Dan Zarrella shows that you won’t retweet this because we’re talking about ourselves. Really, it plays into the viral nature of the Internet. You’re way more likely to trust your friends finding something than us saying it. source

  • Other notes Zarrella also notes that if you want to be retweeted, you need to include a link. A link is key to the process, and nearly 60% of retweets have one (versus fewer than 20% of non-retweeted links). Also: Say something original. Make up some stuff! Use some unusual big words! Play on our emotions! But make sure it’s original. source

  • Our take This explains a lot about how people use social media, but not everything. Seemingly everyone on Twitter’s a marketing expert who would like nothing better than for you to retweet them. Some people are better at this than others – the social media equivalent of Neil Strauss. But in the end, we don’t want to be gamed. source
