U.S.: Justice for interracial-barring justice of the peace in Louisiana

  • The heavily-criticized Keith Bardwell resigned today. The justice of the peace submitted his resignation in person to Louisiana’s Secretary of State. Bardwell has been under fire since refusing to perform the marriage of Beth Humphrey and Terence McKay last month. The couple, which married under a different justice, sued Bardwell and his wife, saying they violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. While Bardwell stands behind his actions, he resigned “because they was going to take me to court, and I was going to lose.” Smart move. source

World: Hillary Clinton puts the nuclear deal in clear terms for Iran

  • Acceptance fully of this proposal … would be a good indication that Iran does not wish to be isolated and does wish to co-operate with the international community.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton • On Iran’s need to not balk at the nuclear deal presented to them by the international community, which is supposed to prove that they’re using the nuclear energy for energy and research, not weapons.. The deal won’t be changed, it won’t be screwed with. It won’t bend for Iran. They’re still deciding, by the way. • source

World: Hillary Clinton: Not many friends among Palestinians right now

  • The Secretary of State and former first lady praised Israel for making “unprecedented” concessions on disputed settlements in the West Bank. source
  • This comment was unexpected, and the Palestinians completely disagree. Most critically, they accuse her of “back-pedaling.” Ouch. source

U.S., World: Russia to U.S.: Back off of Iran; let’s see what they do first

  • We are convinced that threats, sanctions, and threats of pressure in the present situation are counter-productive.
  • Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov • Regarding the U.S. applying pressure to Iran for its nuclear program. Russia has not completely committed to towing the U.S.’ line on the issue, despite Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pushing for it. • source

U.S., World: Hillary in Congo: BILL ISN’T SECRETARY! I AM! HULK SMASH!

  • Wow. Did you see the way Hillary Clinton turned green and her muscles got really big when she was asked that question? She’s a regular Bruce Banner. But that said, we can understand her anger. Clinton went to Congo to bring a stop to rape in the country. In other words, she was fighting a women’s rights issue and had sexism thrown right in her face. Good job, random student!source

Politics: Hillary Clinton’s trump card: Bill Clinton as problem-solver?

  • Now that Bill has successfully completed his North Korea mission, he is sure to play an increasingly prominent role in foreign affairs. The trick for Hillary will be to use him to solidify rather than undermine her position as Secretary of State.
  • Huffington Post columnist Jacob Heilbrunn • Discussing how Bill Clinton’s role as dealbroker in North Korea could pay huge dividends for his wife, who actually has an official role in the Obama administration. Obama lucked out, Heilbrunn notes, saying “he knew that he was getting a twofer.” • source

Politics, U.S.: Hillary won’t be prez but hopes to see a female president soon

  • It will take the right woman who can make the case and win the votes and get elected. I am certainly hoping it will happen in my lifetime.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton • Describing her hopes for a future female president. Clinton, who was smacked down by Barack Obama in last year’s Democratic primaries but spent eight years in the White House as First Lady, ruled herself out of the running for that role. She also didn’t give potential presidential candidate Sarah Palin her seal of approval, either. • source

U.S., World: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sez North Korea has “no friends”

  • There is no place to go for North Korea, they have no friends left that will protect them from the international community’s efforts to move toward denuclearization.
  • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton • In her latest push to get North Korea to denuclearize. As we’re sure you all know, Korea’s off-kilter half has been described as “provocative” in the last few months, and not the kind of “provocative” that Madonna was when she made that book with all the naked photos. And North Korea responded “provocatively” to Clinton, saying she “is by no means intelligent.” Now, if this were a schoolyard fight – and not saying it is – this would be the point we’d expect Clinton, fresh off her elbow injury, to take off her pantsuit jacket and start beating the bloody snot out of the jerk in North Korea who said that. But she wouldn’t do that. Know why? She’s a diplomat. • source

U.S.: Hilary sez she’s still doing her job OK even with a ganked elbow

  • Her words: “I broke my elbow, not my larynx.” Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has been out of the spotlight for a few weeks because of a broken elbow, but she still has a full role in the Obama administration, trashing on critics who say otherwise. Her only problem? The vetting process is so tough that administration officials are still not in their positions six months after the inauguration – they want to guarantee clean politics, apparently. source

U.S.: Hilary Clinton was Secretary of Stating so hard, she broke her elbow

  • She fall down and go boom. Hilary Clinton, everyone’s favorite White House figure that lost in the primaries to Barack Obama, had an accident last night which resulted in a broken elbow. She’ll be back at work soon, but she needs surgery. Let’s get it over with and just give her a bionic arm already. source
