U.S.: Craigslist’s rep damaged again after a deadly home robbery

  • You hate to tell people to be wary of your fellow citizens, but the reality is you’ve got to be wary when you are doing something when interacting with strangers on Craigslist. This is a cautionary tale.
  • Pierce County, Wash. Prosecutor Mark Lindquist • Regarding an April 28 incident where a bunch of thieves found a diamond ring ad on Craigslist, and then proceeded to rob the home. The thieves came to the home, posed as a couple, then, once inside, pulled out a gun and held the family hostage. Two more assailants joined them. They handcuffed the family of four, pistol-whipped the 14-year-old, beat the mother, and when the father tried to defend his son, he was shot three times. The four suspects have been caught, but holy crap. Keep this in time next time you sell stuff (especially expensive stuff), guys. source

U.S.: Times Square evacuation false alarm: Go about your business

  • It was a bunch of water bottles, guys. Six days after the last incident, and just a couple of days after a false alarm involving the RFK bridge, part of Times Square was evacuated again because of a package that arrived about an hour ago. Sorry for the rough week, New Yorkers. We’ll keep you posted. (Update: CNN is reporting that the incident, much like the RFK bridge incident, was a false alarm. Whew. Between this and the stock market, our blood pressure has been going way up lately.) source

U.S.: NYC mayor Bloomberg: Don’t assume it’s al-Qaeda or Taliban yet

  • There are hundreds of videos we haven’t seen all of them. We’ll look at each one many times, with experts… So far there’s no legitimate evidence that al-Qaeda or the Taliban or anyone else had anything to do with this – no matter what the Taliban says.
  • New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg • On whether the evidence suggests that terrorist groups had anything to do with the attempted Times Square attack. Yesterday, the Pakistani Taliban took credit for the car bomb, but Bloomberg is clear that it’s still early and that there’s no evidence that even the “person of interest” is the one responsible for the attempted bombing of Times Square. source

U.S.: So, what’d we miss? *opens browser* Holy crap, Times Square!

  • The guy taking off his shirt in this video is a person of interest in the Times Square car bombing attempt, which managed to clear out one of the most human-saturated areas of the world on Saturday night. The SUV included three propane tanks, a large gun locker, a pressure-cooker-type device with a bunch of wires and some M-88 firecrackers in it, and a bunch of fertilizer that’s incapable of causing explosions. A T-shirt vendor noticed smoke was coming out of it. He stopped a pretty terrible situation. In other words, someone wanted to punish ShortFormBlog for taking a weekend off by nearly blowing up Times Square. Thanks. source

Culture: A little more on Bret Michaels’ condition; it’s not good

  • The Poison singer has a subarachnoid hemorrhage. What’s that, you ask? Well, it’s bleeding in the area between the brain and the tissues that cover the brain (his is at the base of the brain stem). It starts out with a huge headache, usually, and is brought on by a number of risk factors. It can also be the result of injury, so the “Rock of Love” star’s fall at the Tonys is still on the table. Unfortunately, the risk of death in this case is very high, even after treatment. We feel bad for the guy and hope he pulls through. source

Culture: Remember Bret Michaels at the Tonys? Not sayin’, just sayin’.

  • Look, we don’t know the full story yet. But the tumble that Michaels took here at the Tonys is exactly the kind of thing, if he fell the wrong way, that might cause something like a hemorrhage to the brain in the long term. He also had an emergency appendectomy just a week ago. And diabetes. And he’s a hair-metal rocker known for his hard-partying ways. In other words, dude has an insane medical history. We hope he’s OK. We’re pulling for you, man. source
