U.S.: Ron Paul cops a move from T-Paw’s playbook

  • Tim Pawlenty may no longer be running for president, but his influence on the race continues to be felt. If you don’t believe us, check out this new Ron Paul commercial, which mimics Pawlenty’s wonderful Michael Bay-style campaign ads. Paul’s take is admittedly a bit more toned-down, but the general approach is the same–trick young (or disengaged) voters into thinking they’re watching a movie trailer, then flip it on ’em and start pitching the candidate. This ad appeals to electability, making the spurious claim that only Ron Paul can defeat President Obama in the general election. It’s an attempt to widen his appeal, which is devoted (to say the least), but still rather narrow. source

Politics: Ron Paul learns the value of the high-gloss campaign ad

  • It’s interesting, really: If you’ve ever seen Ron Paul’s 2008 presidential campaign ads, you’ll know this is a complete change-up for him. These are Pawlenty-level image-editing values right over here. Will this help him move beyond his base and possibly turn into a 2012 tour de force? Who knows? But it certainly makes him seem more impressive than his 2008 ads ever did. It drives the point home better than anything else he’s ever done. source

  • $18.25 million the amount in donations that Mitt Romney received in the second quarter; the leading GOP candidate is pretty far ahead of the other guys
  • $1.2 million the amount in invoices that Newt Gingrich has; he’s paid them down by ten percent, but still has significant debt issues source
  • » Everyone else is kind of in the middle: With Tim Pawlenty, Jon Huntsman and Ron Paul hovering around the $4 million mark, and Herman Cain around $2.5 million, all pale in comparison to the Mittster, who is unemployed. Newt, who raised $2 million, was saddled with massive debt as a result of much of his senior campaign staff leaving; he has just $225,000 in the bank, which is extremely low. Newt, this presidential thing isn’t gonna work out.

Politics: Ron Paul spokesman criticizes Romney on abortion

  • Given Governor Romney’s past flip-flops on the Right to Life issue and his support for Obamacare-like individual mandates, this stance is very troubling. Right to Life conservatives must question Gov. Romney’s commitment to our cause.
  • Jesse Benton, Ron Paul’s campaign manager • Voicing doubts about Mitt Romney’s commitment to the conservative anti-abortion movement. This line of attack on Romney from the right isn’t unusual, as the former Massachusetts governor was at one time avowedly pro-choice, but now says he’s changed his mind. This highlights an interesting contradiction between professed political ideology and reality, though — there’s a certain inescapable strangeness about a Ron Paul adviser, of all the possible campaigns, being the one to voice this charge. Making abortion illegal (and defunding institutions that provide) is, regardless of one’s feelings on the issue, an enormously “big government” solution. And if there’s one thing Ron Paul opposes in nearly every other circumstance, it’s big government. source

Politics: Ron Paul announces presidential run: Now’s his time to shine

  • Time has come around to the point where the people are agreeing with much of what I’ve been saying for 30 years. So, I think the time is right.
  • Rep. Ron Paul • In announcing his third run for president on “Good Morning America.” A campaign event is planned for later today. Let’s face it — even if it doesn’t succeed this time, now’s the time for Ron to do it. His words hold more influence now than they ever have before. He won’t have to fight so hard for press this time. And unlike Newt Gingrich, he doesn’t need gimmicks (I’m announcing on Twitter!) to pull it off. source

Politics: Ron Paul to run for President again

  • one Establishment favorite and GOP company man Haley Barbour surprised everyone today by announcing that he won’t be running for president in 2012 (probably a good idea, given his poll numbers).
  • two Hours later, Dave Weigel at Slate confirmed that everyone’s favorite scrappy libertarian, Ron Paul, will announce tomorrow an exploratory committee to run for president. Let the ReLOVEution begin again — for the first time. source
  • » What this means: One thing to keep in mind about presidential primaries is that every time a potential candidate announces their intent to run (or that they won’t be running), the calculus for every undecided candidate changes. For example, Haley Barbour is good friends with Mitch Daniels, who is half-heartedly considering a run of his own. With Barbour out, Mitch Daniels has one less excuse not to run. Meanwhile, Ron Paul’s entrance into the race effectively puts an end to his son’s quixotic flirtations with a bid, as Rand Paul already ruled out running against his father. Next question: Will the presence of another libertarian on the ballot put a dent in Paul’s loyal following?

Politics: Ron Paul trashes Paul Ryan’s budget proposal

  • We are dealing with a problem in Washington as a budgetary accounting problem and that’s not it. It’s a philosophy problem.
  • Ron Paul • Ripping into the terms in which the budget debate has been framed; his gripe is that the fundamental acceptance of America as a welfare state isn’t being challenged. He also trashed Paul Ryan’s budget plan, saying that it wouldn’t “come close” to “solv[ing] our problems.” This was all in a speech in Iowa; Paul is said to be leaning towards a third presidential bid. source

Politics: Max Headroom: Ron Paul’s feeling pretty good after CPAC, guys

  • Ron Paul makes his victory lap: If there was one guy who came out of CPAC looking better than he did going in, it was Paul, whose straw-poll win gave him some momentum as he went on “Morning Joe” this morning. Paul, always one to speak his mind, interestingly puts many Tea Partiers in the same camp as traditional Republicans for not going all the way with their anti-tax beliefs. Our favorite part of the clip is where Joe Scarborough brings up military spending, with Paul being very careful to emphasize that “defense spending” is a misnomer.
  • Barbara Bush mocks John Boehner Nothing like looking back at family history to get the waterworks going, which Jenna Bush Hager and her famous grandparents, George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush, are more than happy to do. But what wasn’t expected is Barbara’s goofy rip on the house speaker, where she says to George, during one emotional scene, “You could be Speaker of the House!” LOL.
  • Did she have a stroke?In one of the more unfortunate clips to go viral in the past week or so, KCBS reporter Serene Branson had an unfortunate post-Grammy moment where she started talking in gibberish live on the air. Unfortunately for those who made fun of her, she was possibly having a stroke-like medical crisis, so now you should feel guilty for making fun of her, monsters.
