U.S.: Blago has a few more charges to answer to over that Senate thing

  • 16 number of charges Rod Blagojevich was indicted for last April
  • 24 number of charges Blago faces in an expanded inquiry
  • Why the change? Blago’s former charges had a lot to do with what’s referred to as “honest services fraud,” a statute that allows lawyers to nail corrupt politicians who get a few too many perks for white collar crimes. This law, passed by Congress in the ’80s and responsible for nailing Conrad Black, Jack Abramoff and fellow former Illinois Gov. George Ryan, is likely to get struck down by the Supreme Court in a few months, so they needed something else to nail him on. The eight new charges don’t rely on the law. source

Politics: Rod Blagojevich is “blacker” than Obama, says Rod Blagojevich

  • I’m blacker than Barack Obama. I shined shoes. I grew up in a five-room apartment. My father had a little laundromat in a black community not far from where we lived. I saw it all growing up.
  • Disgraced Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich • In an Esquire interview, saying the kind of thing that makes the Harry Reid thing seem tame. He also made claims in the interview that Obama campaign mastermind David Axelrod tapped him as a presidential candidate in 2008 before Obama. This is the guy that apparently tried to sell Obama’s seat, remember. Blago’s next career move? “The Celebrity Apprentice,” where he’ll be able to share haircare tips with The Donald. source

Culture, Politics: JibJab’s take on 2009 pretty much nails everything

  • Wait, we take that back. We don’t see the Rod Blagojevich/Roland Burris saga, which was as funny as the Mark Sanford saga, if not funnier. Too bad, but they did a good job nailing the bizarre, insanely crazy year that was.

U.S.: Rod Blagojevich is gonna use his blog to tell you he’s a nice guy

“Since his controversial ousting from office …” Wait. Was there anything controversial about Rod’s impeachment, besides the fact that he didn’t like it? source

U.S.: Yo, Roland, glad to hear you aren’t being a jerk anymore

  • Dude won’t run for Senate in 2010. Whew. Roland Burris, who played an incredibly lame game of hokey pokey with Obama’s old Illinois Senate seat with the help of impeached governor Rod Blagojevich, finally gets the hint. Nobody wants him there. As a result, he plans to announce that he won’t run next year, according to party officials. (Not like he’d have a chance anyway, considering all the questions about how he got the seat.) We still think the guy’s a douche, but he’s at least going to be out of everyone’s hairs in a year and a half. source

U.S.: Roland Burris is giggling like a little schoolgirl right now

  • Dude won’t be facing perjury charges. Ah, Roland. The only guy who’s a bigger joke than you in this whole Illinois Senate mess has a nest for a haircut and a near-unpronounceable last name. And he’s probably going to jail eventually. You, on the other hand, probably won’t. The prosecutor behind the case didn’t have enough evidence to pin any wrongdoing on you. The Senate will still investigate him, but no senator has been removed since the Civil War era for wrongdoing. You’re made of Teflon, Roland. source

Culture, U.S.: Sad news, everyone! Blago can’t travel to be on a reality show. :(

  • He’s on trial for a bunch of bad, bad things. Rod Blagojevich, the impeached Illinois governor who’s slowly evolved into a walking punchline, attempted to cash in on his notoriety by preliminarily joining the cast of “I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!” Unfortunately for Blago, the judge thinks it’s too soon for him to leave the country and go to Costa Rica to embarrass himself. “I don’t think this defendant in all honesty…fully understands the position he finds himself in,” commented U.S. District Judge James Zagel. You weren’t supposed to let him do it for him, James. You were supposed to let him do it for us! source

Culture: Rod Blagojevich has fallen to the depths of celebrity reality TV. LOL.

  • Former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich has agreed to be on the next season of “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here,” which is just hi-larious. The impeached ex-pol stands to make $80,000 a week on the show, but at the cost of any shame or personal integrity he had left. source
  • Unfortunately, there may be one thing standing in the way of him making bank on his notoriety. The show tapes in Costa Rica, and he needs to convince the judge presiding over his corruption trial to loosen travel restrictions. For the love of God, judge, please say yes! Pretty please? source

U.S.: The story that will not die, the Blago case, ropes in another guy

  • Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. is on the hot seat now. Federal investigators have taken a larger interest in Jackson, son of a more famous Jesse Jackson and a Democratic congressman from Illinois. The day before former governor Rod Blagojevich was arrested, Jackson went to Blago in an attempt to sell him on appointing him to the seat. Whether that was through “I’m the right guy” truisms or through pay-for-play mechanisms, that’s what investigators hope to find out. Either way, he probably would’ve beat this guy any day of the week. source
