Tech: Boost Mobile’s customer’s aren’t getting much of a boost

  • cause Boost Mobile, in response to the cruddy economy, created a $50 no-contract unlimited plan that’s proved to be very, very popular for broke people.
  • effect It’s so popular, in fact, that many users of the service are complaining about slow text messaging. The influx of new users are to blame. source

Music: Three recent albums Pitchfork says are worth your time

  • one Camera Obscura, “My Maudlin Career”: “The album feels as if it could have been released any time in the last 50-odd years, but the inspired arrangements – and, of course, Campbell’s indelible voice – make it sound fresh, too.”
  • two Art Brut, “Art Brut vs. Satan”: It’s a return to form after a just-OK second album, “a scrappy, romantic, and painfully hilarious return to loserdom. Coldplay will always be more popular. So what? I hate those guys!”
  • three Bill Callahan, “Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle”: They heart the Smog dude. “This self-portrait is so complex and subtle that it’s tempting to skip discussing the actual music, which speaks so eloquently for itself.”

Tech, U.S.: The iPod Touch = The military’s new weapon of choice

  • why? The military has spent all this money on research and development of technology to use in the field, and Apple’s device has nearly equaled it – and at $230 a pop, it costs a lot less than the $600-$700 devices they usually carry around. And, admit it, it looks cool. Wouldn’t you want to carry around an iPod Touch in Iraq?
  • how? Among military uses involve translation software for soldiers in the field, especially in Iraq. Soldiers can also take photos and annotate maps out of the box. The military is also working on its own facial-recognition app to spot terrorism suspects. (No word on if it’s coming to the app store, though we’re guessing no.) source

Music, Tech: Egad! “Rickroll” anthem co-writer got paid £11 by YouTube

  • Panorama did a documentary on the exploitation of foreign workers in Dubai. I feel like one of those workers, because I earned less for a year’s work off Google or YouTube than they did off the Bahrain government.
  • Pete Waterman • The guy who co-wrote Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up,” the song behind the Rickrolling phenomenon. Despite 154 million plays of the song on YouTube, Waterman claims to have only made £11 off of it. Waterman was worth £47 million as of 2004. We feel the £47 million should have been taken away from him for writing “Never Gonna Give You Up.” • source

Music: Check out this guy’s music: Rifle Recoil

  • A master of the delay pedals. Jeff Kessel, a.k.a. Rifle Recoil, has a pretty intriguing approach to his music – he largely builds his tunes on delay pedals into a big, bold sound. Some would call it a wall of sound. The Arlington, Va.-based tunesmith pulls a lot out of his limited array of parts. Worth checking out are his immaculate one-man cover of the Marvin Gaye/Tammi Terrell classic “All I Need” and the funky Prince-like original “Bad Girl.” source
