Politics, U.S.: This Obama school speech thing has legs. Why?

  • The thing that concerned me most about it was it seemed like a direct channel from the president of the United States into the classroom, to my child. I don’t want our schools turned over to some socialist movement.

Because Web sites and conservative talk show hosts started giving it attention on Wednesday, despite the fact that it had been planned for weeks. We hate the fact that this is now a big story. Teachers are largely in a cruddy situation because of the controversy: If they show it, conservatives are up in arms. If they don’t, they’re disrespecting the president. World: One of India’s most powerful politicians dies in helicopter crash

  • Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy never lost an election. After going missing Wednesday morning, the Indian president was found with the wreckage of his helicopter this morning. Four other people also died in the crash, which happened in a remote, hilly area. Reddy was a popular politician who had recently been re-elected chief minister of the Andhra Pradesh region. source

Offbeat: Fighting Paris suburbs pit two one-way streets against each other

  • The conservative French suburb of Levallois-Perret, annoyed by the large amounts of traffic coming from the city, made one of its major roads a one way street, which is kind of selfish. source
  • In response to the traffic buildup caused, a neighboring suburb, Clichy-la-Garenne, made traffic go the other way on the road. At the two towns’ borders, chaos ensued. Yikes. source

U.S.: Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is gritting this through his teeth

  • I’m happy for my friend and I’m extremely happy for my state.
  • Florida Republican Gov. Charlie Crist • On the appointment of one of his close confidants, George LeMieux, as Senator. There’s a subtext here. Crist wants to be Senator in 2010, but it would be bizarre to appoint one’s self to such a job, so he’s having his buddy do it for 17 months, which should be long enough for LeMieux to decide to screw his buddy over and run for Senator himself. LeMieux replaces Sen. Mel Martinez, who resigned from his post to focus on his family. • source

Politics: Huckabee drags Ted Kennedy’s dead body into health care debate

  • It was just laying there in Boston! Huckabee, who is a smart, funny guy whether or not you like his politics, said on his radio show Thursday that Kennedy would have died sooner under Obamacare. “When Sen. Kennedy was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer at 77, did he give up on life and go home to take pain pills and die? Of course not.” We’re not gonna vouch for this, but we are gonna say that now may not be the best time to make this argument. source

  • An important chapter in our history has come to an end. Our country has lost a great leader, who picked up the torch of his fallen brothers and became the greatest United States senator of our time.

Obama was close to Kennedy, even when the Senator was quickly declining in health. “Even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal illness,” he said, “I’ve profited as president from his encouragement and wisdom.” Kennedy’s endorsement of the president was seen as a turning point in last year’s campaign, even if it came at a cost of damaging longstanding relationships with former president Bill Clinton. • source
