  • The bill, currently lacking Republican support, could provide a turning point. Departing Sen. Chris Dodd’s financial reform bill may be a second chance for the GOP. One senator who worked on the bill, Bob Corker, says he felt abandoned by his party when working with Dodd, but Dodd himself thinks the tide might be turning. If the obstructionist policy worked, the Democrat says, “they would go along. But they saw it fail and now they’ve had enough of it and they really want to be involved in crafting things.” source

Politics: Eric Cantor’s attack on Democrats feels kinda tasteless

  • When Eric Cantor gets up in the morning, does he get out of a pod? Is he covered in slime? Because, seriously, he sounds very slimy in this clip, where he suggests Democrats are trying to leverage attacks on them for political gain. Mr. Cantor, where did anyone suggest that a GOP leader led to these attacks? The bullet that Cantor’s referring to, by the way, appears to be a stray bullet shot into the air, according to the Richmond, Va. police department. source

U.S.: GOP Senators succeed in forcing another (#&(@&( health care vote

  • A couple of minor parliamentarian rules were broken. Senate Republicans are going out of their way this week to kinda be total )&#&# about the health care reconciliation bill, with stalling tactics, crazy amendments and such. Late last night, they succeeded at turning the reconciliation process into a pain in the butt, finding minor parliamentary problems with the bill (regarding Pell grants) that force a new House vote. Great. source

Politics: Polling drama: One pollster calls out another, calls for a duel

  • Using all negative statements, rather than a mix of negative and positive ones, reflects another non-standard approach, one that can further bias responses.
  • ABC Director of Polling Gary Langer • Regarding the problems he found with a Harris Interactive survey on “wingnuts” who dislike President Obama. The survey, which suggests as many as 40 percent of people think Obama is a socialist (among other things), also uses the leading phrase “here are some things people have said about President Obama,” with Langer finds particularly troublesome. He calls it “a highly manipulative approach to questionnaire design,” the kind of thing that persuades many respondents into biases. Harris Interactive must be smartin’ about this. source
