Offbeat: Fat guy puts his middle finger into a huge free speech battle

  • Robert Ekas dared to flick off a cop with his middle finger and got ticketed by the cops despite the fact he did nothing wrong otherwise. How did he handle it? He filed a lawsuit, claiming they violated his right to dissent. When you’re driving, it’s the best dissent tool available, apparently. It’d be funny to see if this went anywhere.

  • On the scale of celebrity police mugshots, pretty high. OK, it’s no Nick Nolte. Mel Gibson might be slightly better. But it definitely outdoes Charles Barkley and a few others. Politics: Guy nearly arrested in D.C. snowball fight has great insight

  • That guy in the drab, olive coat and fuzzy wool cap being dragged through the crowd by the detective, shouting, ‘I didn’t throw that snowball’? Yeah, that’s me. At my finest.
  • Daniel Schramm • Describing what he went through after being detained by the police officer who brought a gun to a snowball fight in D.C. on Saturday. Schramm, who wrote a column for The Washington Post on the incident, tried to look at what happened from a big-picture perspective, comparing the incident to his day job as an environmental lawyer. It’s a good read. source

Politics: Bill O’Reilly plays Larry King to Mike Huckabee’s soft-pedal needs

  • Well, at least he found a sympathetic ear. Can we criticize Bill O’Reilly for shifting the blame from the former Arkansas governor just as much as the former Arkansas governor does it himself? He straight-up tells Huckabee, “It’s not your fault.”

U.S.: Ex-police chief on Washington coffee shop slaying: I’m heartbroken

  • I’m horrified. I just can’t believe the news. I’m the old guy around there, and I kind of feel like they’re my sons and daughters. They clearly are the very best Washington has to offer. I’m heartbroken over this.
  • Former Lakewood, Wash. Police Chief Larry Saunders • Describing his feelings about the calculated shootings of four police officers he used to supervise. U.S.: Idiot cop pressed the wrong key, sent racist e-mail to coworkers

  • There is nothing improper about this e-mail. Let’s see which of you are proud enough to send it on … BE PROUD TO BE WHITE!
  • An e-mail chain letter that got Tennessee State Trooper Brent Gobbel in trouble • But only after he sent it to 787 fellow coworkers. The e-mail espoused a white-pride stance, specifically in regard to police officers. “You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us,” the e-mail reads. “But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member … you call him a racist.” Gobbel intended to send the message to himself in a classic Michael Scott move. • source
