Politics: Max Headroom: Iran’s still the talk-show talking point of choice

  • David Axelrod stammers “Meet the Press” had Obama’s main strategist trying to explain why HuffPo’s Nico Pitney asked a planned question at a press conference. Watch him sweat.

  • Fareed Zakaria compares Fareed Zakaria (one of our favorite CNN analysts, BTW), compares Iran to the fall of Communism in Europe, and says it’s unlikely Iran will fall the same way. He sides with Obama.

World: North Korea to U.S.: You shouldn’t ignore us. We got the bomb.

  • It is a grave mistake for the US to think it will not be hurt if it ignores this and ignites the fuse of war on the Korean Peninsula.
  • Commentary in Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of North Korea’s ruling Communist party • In an attempt to again scare the daylights out of the U.S. Obama has said that the U.S. is ready to defend itself in case, you know, North Korea makes good on any of these threats. In fact, we’re tracking a ship that may possibly contain weapons, in violation of North Korea’s sanctions. Ah, playing with fire. • source

Politics: Max Headroom: Twitter and Iran are totally on pundits’ minds

  • Tweet-happy McCain On “Face the Nation,” Sen. John McCain gives credit to social networking sites for their huge role in the protests in Iran – and notes, with excitement, that these are American technologies.

  • Go get ’em, Clay! Clay Shirky, one of media’s greatest thinkers, talks on “Fareed Zakaria GPS” about how the whole world is not just watching, but participating, in the Iran conflict. He says it’s too early to tell if it worked.

U.S.: Gay-rights put their foot down and ask for Obama’s help

  • What we need now is leadership from the president, Congress and state officials to deliver that change. I’m frustrated and disappointed that the administration has not yet delivered on the vision we share for a more equal America.
  • Evan Wolfson • Who represents Freedom to Marry, a national pro-gay-marriage organization. Despite having strong support for their initiatives during the presidential campaign, Barack Obama has found himself up against the wall of Washington politics, playing it safe so that the efforts don’t derail his other initiatives. And gay-rights activists aren’t happy. • source

Offbeat, U.S.: When Obama isn’t busy saving the economy, he’s swatting flies

  • Obama has a huge problem. His new house is swarming with flies, and it’s pissing him off. “He chases them down in the Oval with his briefing papers to smack them,” notes Council of Economic Advisors member Austan Goolsbee. They’re trying to kill them, but they’re still floating around everywhere. We know man. They annoy us too.source

U.S.: Obama: If we have to, we’ll classify these torture photos

  • Republican Sen. Lindsay Graham regaled the knowledge to Congress. Have a desire to see some pretty crazy stuff that the U.S. did to imprisoned terror suspects? Possibly just to see if you can take how disturbing these photos are reported to be? Well, good news, kids. You can’t see them. Apparently the Obama administration is going to classify these photos if it prevents them from getting out. He prefers an act of Congress, but isn’t afraid to just block them himself. Good for them. We don’t need to see terror porn. source

  • Cutting back As predicted a couple of weeks ago, the Office of Thrift Supervision, which supervises savings and loan programs and allowed the AIG fiasco, is going away completely, along with the charter that allows savings and loans to exist. source

U.S.: Obama’s not mentioning who’s visiting the White House

  • A nonpartisan watchdog group asked for a list. Obama said no way. Wondering who’s coming a-knockin’ for influence calls at the White House? Well, the Obama administration is tight-lipped. This is despite the administration’s promises of transparency. And despite court rulings that say they need to. So, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (or CREW) will file a lawsuit today, saying they’re deeply disappointed that they’re following the same path as Bush. (We kinda are, too.) source
