Politics: Poll: The “Ground Zero Mosque” not popular even in NYC

  • 67% of New Yorkers
    think that Park51
    should be built elsewhere
  • 27% of New Yorkers think it should be built near Ground Zero
  • 6% undecided
  • This post style is a little experimental, so if it breaks your browser, sorry. But let’s just say that the thought was there. But that said, this new New York Times poll definitely suggests the idea of the “Ground Zero Mosque” isn’t popular even in NYC. source

Politics: Our latest AOL News article tackles the “Ground Zero Mosque”

  • Sure, you’ve heard of the mosque, but have you heard of the “Ground Zero Fountain Pen Repair Shop”? Because there’s one of those near Ground Zero, too. Along with a couple dueling falafel carts. And a horse-betting business. Whether or not you feel the mosque should go there, it’s worth noting that said mosque is in a very dense part of NYC. That’s what our article tackles. Now, excuse us while we go get some falafel. source

U.S.: Google Earth stakeout: Because illegal swimming pools are bad

  • See any pools down here, guys? They’re kinda like handing out parking tickets for Riverhead, N.Y., which forces pools to have inspections. But since not everyone does it, they’ve resorted to using Google Maps to find out who’s breaking the rules. It’s netted them $75,000 so far. Not a bad way to nickel-and-dime your residents. source

Politics: Happy birthday Charlie Rangel! Ethics trials are good presents

  • Strangely enough, some guests can’t attend his party. Rangel, who turns 80 today, plans to have a $200-a-plate dinner gala tonight, with the proceeds going to Rangel’s ethics-stained reelection campaign. He has invited a number of political bigwigs who may or may not show up – including Bill Clinton (can’t make it), David Paterson (not confirmed), Charles Schumer (not confirmed) and Michael Bloomberg (not confirmed). Worst of all, the night’s entertainment, Aretha Franklin, can’t make it either, due to a rib injury. The 20-term congressman recently made a passionate speech about his plight. source

Politics: Peter King & Anthony Wiener: The Lemmon & Matthau of politics

  • Mediaite totally played up this Fox News clip as a “great television moment,” but before the two minute point or so, we were a bit skeptical. The issue? 9/11 first responder health care benefits – a bill which didn’t pass the House despite it being, you know, 9/11 first responder health care benefits. In the clip, Peter King first gets his point across, Anthony Wiener just stands there, livid. The second Wiener starts talking, it immediately lives up to the hype. For fans of wonkery, this is your “Citizen Kane.” (Side note: Thanks to Mediaite for improving your embeds!) source

Politics: I won’t back down, part 1: Charlie Rangel’s ethics charges

  • 13 ethics charges against a guy who wouldn’t back down source
  • » An unexpected result: Many in Congress expected Rangel to strike a deal to avoid a politically embarrassing trial, but instead, here we are. Some close to him, however, suggest that Rangel, a co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, believes he did nothing wrong.

U.S.: Ethics charges: So, what is Charles Rangel facing, anyway?

  • The charges are unspecified. The allegations, though … This sounds pretty bad for Charlie. According to the Sunlight Foundation, the longtime New York congressman reportedly omitted between $239,026 and $831,000 from his financial disclosures (assets either purchased, sold or held), and also reportedly had some shady dealings with AIG. He’s had a rough couple of years, and stepped down from his chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee back in March. Poor Charlie. source

Politics: Rep. Jerrold Nadler is a guy who stiffs cabbies on their fares

  • He said I will not pay you if you don’t take me running the same meter which we came with.
  • Unlucky cabbie Abraham Habteab • About a minor scandal which happened under his watch – Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York skipped out on a cab ride, because he was ticked about the fare. Nadler was in the wrong – Habteab was in the right to restart the meter, and charge for the wait time caused by Nadler going to a nearby hotel. Dude, just pay the guy. You know you can afford it. source

Politics: Eliot Spitzer: CNN uses words like “well-respected” and “prostitute”

  • Spitzer, a Democrat who resigned as governor in March 2008 after acknowledging visiting a prostitute, is a well respected political mind and a take-no-prisoners prosecutor who has been often referred to as the ‘Sheriff of Wall Street.’
  • A CNN press release • Regarding the move to take the former New York governor and put him on their 8 p.m. slot against Keith Olbermann and Bill O’Reilly. Spitzer, who we admit to be willing to give a second chance, will be joined by conservative Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker. All told, the stunt-casting should get CNN some of eyeballs that Campbell Brown’s show never did. (Maybe.) Now, next step: Filling that 9 p.m. slot with someone other than Larry King. source

Culture: Protip: Houses that inspire horror movies a sound investment

  • $55k the amount the “Amityville Horrors” house sold for not long after six people were killed inside
  • $310k the amount the house sold for in 1997, nearly 20 years after the popular 1979 movie first came out
  • $1.1M the amount the house just went on the market for; an infamous murder no longer a reason for a discount source
