Politics: Eliot Spitzer: CNN uses words like “well-respected” and “prostitute”

  • Spitzer, a Democrat who resigned as governor in March 2008 after acknowledging visiting a prostitute, is a well respected political mind and a take-no-prisoners prosecutor who has been often referred to as the ‘Sheriff of Wall Street.’
  • A CNN press release • Regarding the move to take the former New York governor and put him on their 8 p.m. slot against Keith Olbermann and Bill O’Reilly. Spitzer, who we admit to be willing to give a second chance, will be joined by conservative Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker. All told, the stunt-casting should get CNN some of eyeballs that Campbell Brown’s show never did. (Maybe.) Now, next step: Filling that 9 p.m. slot with someone other than Larry King. source

U.S.: Busy day on the Supreme Court tip. Here’s a sampling.

  • A seismic shift The biggest, most notable decision the court made today was ruling in favor of a group of white firefighters who felt they were discriminated against due to the city of New Haven, Conn. hiring black firefighters with lower scores on a test. This will affect hiring practices across the board.
  • Cable > big mediaThose with cable set-top boxes have reason to be happy, as the court also ruled in favor of cable companies who wanted to allow their users to store their shows on a central server. That means you don’t have to buy a DVR with a massive hard drive – and that TiVo is screwed.
  • Spitzer’s phoenix risesThe Court made one fairly surprising decision, letting state regulators take on national lenders for discriminatory practices, such as high interest rates. The decision should help former New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer’s rep, as it’s based on moves he made as the state’s attorney general.

Politics, U.S.: Elliot Spitzer appears to be ready for image rehab

  • He’s on CNN! The former governor of New York, forced out of office last year after a sex scandal with a prostitution ring, had an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria which will air in full on Sunday. They’ll talk about Spitzer’s AIG whistleblowing. Key quote: “Back then I said to people, ‘AIG is the center of the web.’ The financial tentacles of this company stretched to every major investment bank.”
  • He’s on Slate! Spitzer’s other sign of public life is in the form of a regular column he’s writing for Slate. In his most recent column, he discusses how the financial crisis affects governors. “Governors must deal with all the problems confronting our economy,” he says, “but they lack the federal government’s ability to run a deficit.” He may still have a political career yet.
