World: “An important document”: What a letter from Hitler (circa 1919) looks like

  • The Museum of Tolerance to put Hitler’s letter on display: Written before his “Mein Kampf” manifesto, the letter mentions the “Jewish threat.” Deborah Lipstadt, a professor at Emory University, said that this letter is “important for helping us understand Adolf Hitler.”  source

Politics: Lars von Trier dishes up Hitler sympathy at Cannes

  • What can I say? I understand Hitler, but I think he did some wrong things, yes, absolutely. But I can see him sitting in his bunker in the end. He’s not what you would call a good guy, but I understand much about him, and I sympathize with him a little bit. But come on, I’m not for the Second World War, and I’m not against Jews. I am very much for Jews. No, not too much, because Israel is a pain in the ass. How can I get out of this sentence? … OK, I’m a Nazi.
  • Lars von Trier • Giving a pretty good impression of verbal self-destruction in just a handful of seconds. Von Trier has already apologized for this dispiriting and horrible speech, on the heels of organizers of the Cannes Film Festival, which von Trier was speaking at when he let this slip, called his performance “disturbing.” source

Politics: Max Headroom: Godwin’s Law broken again and again

  • Glenn Beck: Nazi-obsessed The fact of the matter is, there are dozens of clips that feature the Fox News talker bringing up Nazi Germany. We’re going to use this one because he cries in the clip. If this were an isolated incident that’d be one thing, but he regularly does this song and dance.

  • Lewis Black: Stop it, Glen With this bevy of ammo, “The Daily Show’s” most gleefully annoyed commentator went on the attack, noting how Beck is the guy who regularly brings up Nazis. Inspired even for a “Daily Show” rant, Black makes a totally convincing argument in his spiel.

  • Newt: Full steam ahead Just days after Black’s deafening rant, Newt Gingrich compared the Obama administration to Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia (something he says in his new book). You’d think Black’s rant would perhaps quiet the Nazi comparison racket. Nope. Not so much.

Culture: The downfall of the “Downfall” meme: Hitler won’t be happy, guys

  • Way to take the fun out of Hitler, guys. You’ve seen this meme probably a million times. (We know we have.) Anyway, the rise of the “Downfall” meme has hit a dead-end, after producers of the film started ordering clips from the film be taken down. Probably is, these clips are almost all across-the-board parodies of the original clip, where Hitler learns that he’s about to lose the war. Above is a super-meta clip that makes fun of the DMCA takedown notices. source

Politics, U.S.: Poll: Do you guys care about town hall protests anymore?

  • The video
  • The video
  • About the video This is a great example of a town hall protest: This Marine vet, David William Hedrick, attacks Congressman Brian Baird. During the speech, he compares Nancy Pelosi to a Nazi wearing an S.S. armband. The guy’s very proud of his statement, and says so in the video’s description. We feel like we saw a video like this, with similar arguments, weeks ago.

  • Why the poll? The video got us to thinking. We can’t be alone in thinking that maybe this card has been a bit overplayed. It seems like, instead of pushing forth the Democratic process, so many people are doing this that it’s reached a saturation point. Whether it’s organic or astroturfing, it’s been getting play for weeks. Are we wrong? Are we right? Let us know. Vote.

Politics: Lyndon LaRouche makes Glenn Beck look like a pacifist

Obama as a Nazi
  • The pamphlet Today, before we got on the D.C. Metro at Chinatown, we noticed that the usual Nation of Islam-types in front of the station were joined by people handing out pamphlets for the Lyndon LaRouche political action committee. And, boy, that pamphlet was a bag of crazy. He’s a crackpot, but this time he crossed the line. And we’re concerned that it’s actually getting traction. source

  • What’s inside? The cover features the photo above, a clearly-photoshopped image of Obama designed to make him look like a Nazi. And the text only sells it more: “We must emphasize the fact of his adopting a virtual carbon-copy of the Adolf Hitler health-care policies, later judged to be genocide, of September 1, 1939,” LaRouche writes. This is just evil. source

  • Our take LaRouche affiliates with the Democrats, but they don’t want him. This is why. This pamphlet argues for racism, hate, and the worst corners of our society. And based on this Google Image Search, it’s getting far too much currency. On the plus side, he’s almost 90. He’ll be dead soon, and hopefully this bile will go away along with him. source

Culture: “Inglorious Basterds” gives a glorious welcome to Eli Roth’s parents

  • So my parents were there with Hitler singing ‘Happy Birthday,’ watching their son do his Nazi propaganda movie.
  • Director/actor Eli Roth (who is Jewish by the way) • On the surreal experience of convincing his parents to visit Berlin – breaking a vow they made to never visit the city – to see him make “Inglorious Basterds.” Director Quentin Tarantino had his 300 characters, dressed as Nazis, sing for Roth’s parents as if it was their birthday (it wasn’t). This actually amused the heck out of them – they spent the day getting charmed by Tarantino. Man, we need to try harder. • source

Politics, U.S.: Example No. 2 of GOP Obama fury: Nazi comparisons

Rush Limbaugh, among others, have made this logo comparison. We get it. You don’t like it. But can we keep the level of discourse a little higher than this? source
