World: The Vatican’s Jewish persecution comparison didn’t go over well

  • “This is really in bad taste.” On the list of least likely things you would’ve expected to come from the Vatican, a comparison of an abuse scandal and cover-up to Jewish persecution is pretty high. And a bunch of Jews aren’t happy about it, either. A Vatican spokesperson finally did some damage control, saying the line “is absolutely not the line of the Vatican and of the Catholic Church,” but the damage has already been done. source

  • Seriously, dude? Seriously? Sometimes, it’s probably best to cut your losses and just admit you screwed up, and in the case of the Vatican, they’re well past that point. During a Good Friday service, Rev. Raniero Cantalamessa, who has served as preacher for the Papal household since 1980, made the questionable comparison of the Vatican’s troubles to the 2,000-plus-years-strong pains of Jews. U.S., World: John Demjanjuk, the suspected Nazi guard, got charged today

  • He was deported from the U.S. to Germany in May. Demjanjuk was charged with being an accessory to 27,900 murders during the Holocaust by the German government. After spending years with a is-he-or-isn’t-he rep, he was suspected of being “Ivan the Terrible” and convicted in Israel in 1986, only to have that charge overturned. But the claims against the Russian-born Demjanjuk – who has been stripped of U.S. citizenship twice over the allegations – continued to follow him, and the 89-year-old will face trial for his suspected crimes. source

One time, he threatened the owner of an art gallery with a gun for not selling his paintings. And his marriage crumbled in part because of his racist leanings.
