Culture: New York: Please stop making examples of celebrities like Lil Wayne

  • First Plaxico, now the rap star. Not cool. Thanks in part to New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, the state has some of the strictest laws on the books when it comes to gun possession. Plaxico Burress at least shot off his gun before he got a two-year jail sentence for gun possession. Unfortunately for Lil Wayne, though, he was nicked with “attempted gun possession” and will face as much as a year. As a non-resident of the state, he was unaware of the law, but simply being unaware of the law is not a good enough reason. Not that we’re suggesting he should’ve been in possession of the gun, but jail time for this is unbelievable. For shame, New York state. source

Sports: Sucky fate for a former Superhero: Plaxico Burress is going to jail

  • I think in this case a fundamentally decent man, who violated the law, is going to be sentenced to a prison sentence. But I do not believe, under the circumstances of this case, we are sentencing a criminal in the true sense of he word.
  • Lawyer Benjamin Brafman • Discussing the Plaxico Burress case after his sentencing. Burress got sentenced to two years in prison today, and will likely spend 20 months in jail as a result of the incident, where he brought a gun into a nightclub and accidentally shot himself in the leg. A bit harsh considering he was the one who got hurt, but he had an expired license for the gun in a different state. Just two seasons ago, Burress, a former New York Giant, was the star of the show at the Super Bowl. • source

Politics, Sports: Is the NFL kicking Michael Vick when he’s down?

  • A man just spent two years in a federal penitentiary, but for Goodell — the commissioner of a sport in which a grown man runs around with a ball until someone else tackles him to the ground — doing real, hard time wasn’t enough.
  • ESPN.com columnist Howard Bryant • In a scathing criticism of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s handling of the Michael Vick saga. As opposed to just letting the man play after years of suspension and two years of jail, Goodell tacked another suspension on top of that. Regarding the possibility that Goodell could actually extend the suspension, Bryant says, “There is something childish and vindictive and personal about this, and that is the secondary, more sinister element in the ruling.” • source

World: If Newsweek reporter Maziar Bahari said this, we’re wearing a pink tutu.

  • When a Western reporter comes to Iran, like a politician or specialist, he will be made to fit into the Western complex. For that person, the interests of the Westerners, who take advantage of every occasion to stand against Iran, are of utmost importance.
  • “Jailed Newsweek reporter Maziar Bahari” • In a confession published by Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency. He also admitted filing false reports during the elections, a claim the people who sign his paycheck deny. Bahari has been out of touch with his family and lawyer since his June 21 arrest, and the Iranian government is full of $*#&. • source
