U.S.: Another powerful guy in same boat as Dominique Strauss-Kahn

  • Stop us if you think that you’ve heard this one before: A prominent banking official staying at a high-class hotel in New York City. A maid comes into his hotel room. He’s inside. And he reportedly tries doing some pretty sketchy stuff to said maid. She tells authorities, and now the prominent official is in custody, waiting to be charged. If this sounds just like the Dominique Strauss-Kahn case, you’re right. If you think we’re talking about Dominique Strauss-Kahn, not so much. This, instead, is the story of Mahmoud Abdel Salam Omar, the former head of Egypt’s Bank of Alexandria, who is accused of doing essentially the same thing two weeks later at Manhattan’s Hotel Pierre. Ugh. We didn’t expect a possible copycat crime here. (photo of said hotel via edenpictures’ Flickr page) source

Offbeat: Some hotel/motel/Holiday Inn employee willing to jump in your bed

  • It’s the company’s new human-bed-warming service. When we at the hotel/motel/Holiday Inn, sometimes we get a little cold before tucking in. Fortunately, they have that covered. Someone will jump into your bed in a onesie, lay around, and get the bed warm for you. “The new Holiday Inn bed warmers service is a bit like having a giant hot water bottle in your bed,” the company’s spokeswoman Jane Bednall noted. Can they keep us company, too? We get lonely in hotel rooms sometimes. source

World: Hotel bombings in Indonesia kill eight, leave many injured

  • Well, this is really freaking scary. Two large hotels with corporate parents in the U.S. were bombed this morning in Jakarta, Indonesia. The JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels were attacked this morning, causing a huge scene and eight deaths. The bombings are also notable due to the fact that they happened in hotels with heavy security.source

Culture: Classy: A Thai newspaper prints David Carradine death photos

  • His family is very upset about the photos. Body photos of Carradine, who might’ve died in a disturbing, accidental way, were apparently shown in a Thai newspaper. His family, clearly upset, has threatened to sue. Beyond the photos, Carradine’s family asked for assistance from the FBI in the case. Lawyer Mark Geragos, who works for David’s brother Keith, explains: “All we really know is not much more than what the public knows, and that’s disturbing.” source

Culture: David Carradine was found hanged. Was it a suicide?

  • His family is in shock. They have the same belief we have. There was no way David did this to himself.
  • Tiffany Smith • A representative from Carradine’s management firm, Binder & Associates. Carradine, the iconic martial arts actor (who actually didn’t know anything about it until his role in “Kung Fu” but later became a huge advocate), was found naked and hanged in his hotel room in Bangkok, Thailand. Many early reports speculated that it was suicide.  • source
