Culture: Is Charlie Sheen the Teflon Sheen? Observers say he is

  • Charlie Sheen has bounced back from various scandals, and I don’t think anyone expects anything more from him. Bad-boy behavior is part of his persona that’s been a work in progress since the 1980s. He has bounced back time and time again.
  • Public relations expert Vanessa J. Horwell • On why Charlie Sheen can do things like get in domestic violence disputes (with hilarious mug shots), accidentally shoot his girlfriend (I’m really sorry, Kelly) and show up prominently on the Hollywood Madam’s list without seeing any visible effect on his career. It’s because, unlike Emilio, everything rolls off him. It’s his sheen (*rimshot!*). source

Culture: Is the Michael Cera hipster backlash upon us, guys?

  • He’s not a kid anymore, and that goofy-awkward-cute-puppy-dog shtick is wearing off, say some hipster sources which we don’t associate ourselves with (because we completely disagree). But with poorly-reviewed cutesy indie flick “Paper Heart” bringing in less than a million in a month of limited release, and would-be blockbuster “Year One” blowing it at the box office, perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate. source

Culture: Michael Douglas’ son may be a big-time meth dealer

  • That’s what court documents say. The famous actor’s son, Cameron, was arrested late last month for selling drugs, but it was only revealed last week just how many he sold. Apparently, the sometime actor was selling methamphetamine that was worth tens of thousands of dollars. That’s an amount large enough to warrant the famous son a life sentence in prison. He’ll get at least 10 years if convicted. source

Culture, Tech: Greg Grunberg: “Heroes” star, Yowza iPhone app maven

  • At the beginning it was a tough chicken and egg situation. Where I was calling and saying ‘Hi it’s Greg Grunberg, star of NBC’s Heroes, can I talk to the head of marketing please,’ and I would get them on the phone.
  • Greg Grunberg • On his pretty solid side career producing the Yowza iPhone app, a GPS-aware coupon-referring program that has become a hit. He claims that he’s always been a bit of an entrepreneur and that it’s a solid backup plan just in case he gets killed off on “Heroes” someday. (Not that he should have a problem with that, because his character can read people’s thoughts.) • source

Culture: David Carradine was found hanged. Was it a suicide?

  • His family is in shock. They have the same belief we have. There was no way David did this to himself.
  • Tiffany Smith • A representative from Carradine’s management firm, Binder & Associates. Carradine, the iconic martial arts actor (who actually didn’t know anything about it until his role in “Kung Fu” but later became a huge advocate), was found naked and hanged in his hotel room in Bangkok, Thailand. Many early reports speculated that it was suicide.  • source

Culture: Four ways you’re familiar with funnyman Dom DeLuise

  • one He starred in a bunch of Mel Brooks movies, most notably as the voice of Pizza the Hutt in “Spaceballs.” Spiffy.
  • two He also starred in a lot of Burt Reynolds movies, including a couple “Cannonball Run” flicks and “Smokey & the Bandit II.”
  • three He’s had a few starring vehicles of his own, most notably the food-addicted main character of the dark comedy “Fatso.”
  • four He’s the fat old dude with the beard and the cap who likes food, but not fellow bearded, capped fat chef dude Paul Prudhomme. source

Tech: The voice of the Amazon Kindle 2 does what he does best: Talks.

  • I record a massive amount of fragments and random sentences, and they’re able to chop them up in a way that allows my voice to speak whatever is written down – that’s an over-simplification, since I don’t understand all the intricacies of how it works.
  • Tom Glynn • A Boston-based voice actor who’s also the voice of Bank of America and the National Weather Service, among other things. Now he reads books to you like your mom used to. • source

Culture, World: Dwight from “The Office” speaks out on his Baha’i faith

  • About the faith Rainn Wilson is a member of the Baha’i faith, a monotheistic religion which started in Iran in the mid 1800s. As places to start religions go, Iran is a pretty bad one, and much religious persecution has occurred there since. It’s probably worse than anything Dwight puts up with.
  • Why he’s speaking out Wilson, in a commentary piece he wrote for CNN, is bringing light to the religion in part because of a group of seven prisoners being held in Iran on a variety of charges he says lack evidence – just the latest to be persecuted by Iran. Learn more about the seven here. source
