Sports: An ode to one of our heroes, Detroit Pistons coach Chuck Daly

  • history Back in the late 1980s, we were glued to our TV sets whenever the Detroit Pistons were on. We watched a team that had a solid nucleus and a rep for physical play as they won the NBA finals twice. They were the Bad Boys.
  • focus None of this would have happened without Chuck Daly. Daly was the guy responsible for much of the team’s success – they never had back-to-back winning seasons before he started coaching the Bad Boys. He ruled.
  • legacy Sure, there were other players – Joe Dumars, Isiah Thomas, Bill Laimbeer – but really, he was the glue that held them together. Daly died this morning at 78. His legacy is one of the greatest in basketball history. source

Sports: Evidence the Boston Celtics made a pact with the devil last season

  • first Kevin Garnett, the lynchpin of the trio that led the Celtics to the NBA championship last season, may apparently miss the playoffs this year due to injury. Time to fret for the Celtics’ future.
  • second Danny Ainge, the architect of the deal that made the Celtics contenders again, had a mild heart attack today. He’s doing OK considering, but we’re concerned there may be a curse at play here.

Sports: Coach of basketball team with 100-0 game: It wasn’t our goal

  • To us, it was just another game. I think to mainstream media, everyone looked at it as … a team that just decided to run up a score.
  • Micah Grimes • Former coach of the Dallas, Tx.-based Covenant School girl’s basketball team, discussing at length his team’s 100-0 thrashing of Dallas Academy in January. Dude. Did you not see the freaking score? It wasn’t like you guys tripped into winning. The win set off a national debate about sportsmanlike conduct in high school sports, by the way, and Grimes lost his job in the process. At least someone took something good out of the game. • source

  • To have this school come in and do what it’s doing right now, to make everybody feel good and have something to cheer about instead of more bad news … Then, when you think about what it’s going to do for the economy, oh, my goodness.
  • MSU (and NBA) legend Magic Johnson • Talking about MSU making the championship game, 30 years after he faced Larry Bird in this game – and during a particularly tough time for the state’s economy, doing it locally (the Final Four was held in Detroit this season).
