U.S.: ELECTION RESULTS: Chris Christie upsets Jon Corzine in New Jersey

  • It was a close race, at the end, but it wasn’t enough to keep the incumbent in office. In an election night which is starting to look like a wash for the Democrats, the Republicans won the two biggest prizes up for grabs. Poll numbers at the end leaned towards Corzine, but independents didn’t stick with him. The AP is calling this (and we usually boycott them), but we feel that this news is big enough that it’s worth an exception.source

U.S.: Gavin Newsom: Not the next governor of California. By choice.

  • With a young family and responsibilities at City Hall, I have found it impossible to commit the time required to complete this effort the way it needs to – and should be – done.
  • San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom • Describing his reasons for no longer running for governor of California. It was a sudden drop-out, one precipitated by Attorney General Jerry Brown’s staggering lead over him in the Democratic primary. The center-leaning Newsom tried really hard to replicate Obama’s social-networking success but couldn’t pull it off. Too bad. Seems like he would’ve been a good governor based on his success in the Bay Area. • source

Politics: Mrs. Paterson to Obama: Don’t #(^@ with my governor hubby!

  • David’s the first African-American governor in the state of New York and he’s being asked to get out of the race. It’s very unusual and it seems very unfair.
  • Michelle Paterson • On the controversy surrounding her husband, New York Governor David Paterson, who the Obama administration recently asked to leave the race. Going further, Paterson says: “I think he was stunned. Like I said this is very unusual.” Well, Obama … he’s not leaving the race. • source

U.S.: You know David Paterson sucks when Obama asks him not to run

  • The New York governor hangs his head in shame. You know it sucks to be David Paterson right now. You’re legally blind AND you replaced a guy who frequented a high-priced call girl. But you’re still somehow doing worse than your predecessor. So much so that the Obama administration has asked you to not run in 2010, for fear of residual effects. You suck so much apparently, David, that you can’t be allowed to stay in office. Aww. It’ll be OK, man. source

U.S.: Ahnold: They’re called wildfire evacuations for a reason

  • I want to urge everyone living near any of the fires, please, listen and follow evacuation orders from local officials. They will not tell you to evacuate if it’s not necessary.
  • California Governor Arnold Schwartzenegger • Discussing the threat that the wildfires are causing to people in Southern California – a threat that should be taken seriously. Three people were hurt today because they specifically didn’t listen to evacuation orders. 35,200 acres have burned thus far. • source

U.S.: Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is gritting this through his teeth

  • I’m happy for my friend and I’m extremely happy for my state.
  • Florida Republican Gov. Charlie Crist • On the appointment of one of his close confidants, George LeMieux, as Senator. There’s a subtext here. Crist wants to be Senator in 2010, but it would be bizarre to appoint one’s self to such a job, so he’s having his buddy do it for 17 months, which should be long enough for LeMieux to decide to screw his buddy over and run for Senator himself. LeMieux replaces Sen. Mel Martinez, who resigned from his post to focus on his family. • source

Politics: When Sarah Palin says something, it inexplicably becomes news

  • FOX News’ Glenn Beck is doing an extraordinary job this week walking America behind the scenes of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and outlining who is actually running the White House. Monday night he asked us to invite one friend to watch; tonight I invite all my friends to watch.
  • Sarah Pa … SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP … lin (sorry, we don’t know what came over us) • Discussing the fate of Glenn Beck and offering her support. Palin has become that rare politician who doesn’t have to have an elected office to have a huge impact in the media. Literally, she puts something on her Facebook page, and all of a sudden, it’s news. Man, we wish we could do that. • source
