World: An Afghan airstrike leads top German minister Franz Josef Jung to resign

  • He’s the third top official to resign this week. Jung and others were under pressure after a September attack in Afghanistan killed civilians. It came out in local newspaper Bild that Jung and others likely knew of the civilian casualties from the point it happened. Those who resigned all assumed responsibility for the attacks. source

World: Germans celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall’s breakdown

  • Today will be loaded with celebration for Germans celebrating the 20th anniversary of the end of the Berlin Wall – that product of communism that divided the country in two. Among things to keep an eye on in this Flickr feed (which promises to get more interesting later today): A row of handkerchiefs creating a symbolic wall. “Handkerchiefs are a symbol of the many tears, the farewells, the joy, the dance, the exchange between East and West,” explains organiser Bernd Klippel.source

World: Germany’s Angela Merkel is having another go as chancellor

  • We can really celebrate tonight, but afterwards we have a hard job ahead of us.
  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel • Who was elected to a second term on Sunday. Despite the win, things are a bit different this time around. Merkel’s CDU/CSU voting bloc lost a partner in the Social Democrats (SPD), who bombed hard in the election (thanks to the recession) and had their worst result in decades. Merkel’s bloc will likely work closely with the liberal Free Democrats (FDP). All that wheeling and dealing and economic recovery takes work. So no partying after tonight. We know you like your beer, Germany, but now isn’t the time. • source

Culture: Note to Twitter: Rick Astley didn’t die in a Berlin hotel room

  • Known for his 80’s pop hit “Never Gonna Give You Up,” the 43-year-old Rick Astley has been pronounced dead today. Astley’s body was found at the Angleterre Hotel in Berlin after an ambulance responded to an emergency call from his hotel room.
  • A CNN iReport submitted by John Manker • Saying that Rick Astley died. The attempted death pool Rickroll, perpetrated by image forum, 4Chan (whose members often go by “Anonymous” and are often involved in pranks), is an out and out lie. Just so you’re aware. • source

Offbeat, World: Woman somehow got in pool with polar bear, got bitten. Duh

  • The German woman has multiple injuries, a lot of explaining to do. The Berlin Zoo puts its polar bears behind multiple barriers for a reason. The reason is so that photos like this one (SFW but a little painful to look at) don’t happen. How could people be this stupid? source

Tech: Classy: A Facebook group changes from pro-Jews to pro-Hitler

  • It baited and switched hundreds of people. Almost 2,000 people were shocked to find out that the group had changed its name from “I Heart Jews” to “Hitler: Great Modern Man of History.” (It appears to have been switched back now.) The video links to a local Fox news TV report that’s just a tad overwraught, even considering the sensitive nature of the material. source
