Biz: Papa John’s hearts look more like circles with the tops cut off

  • Happy Valentine’s Day, pizza fan! Perhaps your great idea of getting a heart-shaped pizza in lieu of flowers or candy sounded good, but as proven by these photos of a “heart-shaped” pizza, it was perhaps misguided. Who loves you? Not Papa John’s. source

U.S.: The FDA wants to make serving sizes on food actually realistic

  • If you put on a meaningful portion size, it would scare a lot of people. They would see, ‘I’m going to get 300 calories from that, or 500 calories.’
  • University of North Carolina nutrition professor Barry Popkin • Regarding the possibility that the FDA could change serving sizes to match how people actually eat food. Some foods have serving sizes of just an ounce or a cup despite the fact that people eat far more than that. A serving of cereal is just three-quarters of a cup, despite the fact kids often eat two cups. The serving sizes were based on studies of how much people ate in the 70s or 80s, but often suggest unrealistically small servings. This is a good idea. source

Culture: Jaws Jumbo Burger has the right idea about Jay Leno’s career

  • This commercial probably cost 10¢ to make, but we bet the dividends could be huge if Leno takes some of that money he’s been storing away from “The Tonight Show” to bring this burger joint to Burbank. In fact, he should just stop doing “The Tonight Show” altogether and work there as a manager, since he likes working so much. Nobody would miss his show. source

U.S.: Cadbury seems rather optimistic about the Kraft Foods buyout

  • We believe the offer represents good value for Cadbury shareholders and are pleased with the commitment that Kraft Foods has made to our heritage, values and people throughout the world.
  • Cadbury Chairman Roger Carr • On the $19.5 billion buyout offer that Kraft showed the company today. For months, Cadbury rejected Kraft’s advances. No longer. While Cadbury is open to other offers – get your #(&^ together, Hershey – they seem quite happy with the offer that the world’s second-largest food company has put forth. If they combined, they would become the largest. source

Biz: Kraft wants Cadbury bad. Warren Buffett thinks it’s unhealthy.

  • Berkshire Hathaway owns 9.4% of Kraft’s stock, so they should take heed. Kraft has been in unhealthy pursuit of the candy company for months, and just sweetened the deal again to convince them to go for it. Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, however, warned Kraft they wouldn’t be voting for the purchase, calling it a “blank check” and saying Kraft’s stock is too valuable for a purchase like this. Too Velveeta-like in texture. source

Biz: Taco Bell’s “Drive-Thru Diet” sounds like a load of refried beans

  • For me, I didn’t want to cut out my fast food so I started choosing Fresco items from the Drive-Thru Diet® menu and making other sensible choices. I reduced my daily calorie and fat intake by 500 calories to 1250 calories a day, and, after two years, I ended up losing 54 pounds!
  • “Christine” • Describing her miraculous, Jared-like change from regular person to hot chick thanks to eating Taco Bell. All by switching from regular Taco Bell to the “Fresco” menu – which essentially means salsa instead of cheese on most items. We’re not the only ones skeptical – the L.A. Times notes that “The blurb on Christine is more loaded with disclaimers than a box of cheese-covered nachos is with empty calories.” Julius used to work at Taco Bell – a place that deep-fries bread and calls it a “Chalupa,” and also makes its food from the same 15 ingredients. This is bull. source
