Politics: Michelle Obama tired of being portrayed as “angry black woman”

  • I guess it’s more interesting to imagine this conflicted situation here and a strong woman and — you know? But that’s been an image that people have tried to paint of me since the day Barack announced, that I’m some angry black woman.
  • Michelle Obama • Defending herself from claims that she fostered tension with the president’s top deputies — Rahm Emanuel and Robert Gibbs — leading to the claims getting into New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor’s book “The Obamas.” We can certainly agree with the basic thrust of what she’s saying — even if Kantor’s book is accurate, just look at how much crap she gets over the stupidest things from the right. That is clearly the result of others trying to typecast her in a certain image. Let’s cut the image politics here. source

Offbeat: Michelle Obama: Record-holding jumping jacks expert

  • Back in October, Michelle Obama and 300,265 other people worldwide (including 400 in her direct vicinity) attempted to break a record by doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period. The record attempt was successful, Obama said on the “Let’s Move” Web site this morning. We’re totally gonna celebrate by doing some jumping jacks ourselves. Because we’re creative like that. source

Culture: Michelle Obama shops at Target: Today in things that suprise nobody

  • It is not uncommon for the First Lady to slip out to run an errand, eat at a local restaurant or otherwise enjoy the city outside the White House gates.
  • Michelle Obama’s communications director, Kristina Schake • Stating the obvious in the wake of the AP getting a photo of her shopping at Target. To which we say: Duh. Do you think she spends all of her time just hanging out at the White House all day? She’d go crazy. Heh. Most people don’t, however, need plainclothes Secret Service agents to enter the Target half an hour ahead of them just so they can go shopping. source

Politics: Sarah Palin invokes class warfare in ripping Bushes

  • Let’s say you’re Sarah Palin and you just got criticized by a former first lady. How would you handle the criticism? Well, in Sarah Palin’s case, this is how: “I don’t want to concede that we have to get used to this kind of thing, because i don’t think the majority of Americans want to put up with the blue-bloods — and i want to say it with all due respect because I love the Bushes — the blue bloods who want to pick and chose their winners instead of allowing competition.” She said that on Laura Ingraham’s show yesterday. So, to be clear, she just ripped on a former president and first lady for being privileged because they suggested she was unqualified to be president. Check. source

U.S.: Laura Bush on the deadly crash from her teenage days

  • In those awful seconds, the car door must have been flung open by the impact and my body rose in the air until gravity took over and I was pulled, hard and fast, back to earth. … The whole time, I was praying that the person in the other car was alive. In my mind, I was calling ‘Please, God. Please, God. Please, God,’ over and over and over again.
  • Former First Lady Laura Bush • Regarding the deadly crash which happened when she was 17 and living in Midland, Tx. She wrote about it in her new book, “Spoken From the Heart.” The 1963 crash, which happened when she and a friend were rushing to a drive-in theater, took the life of a star athlete at her school, Mike Douglas. Douglas was driving a Corvair, the car her husband’s future third-party presidential opponent, Ralph Nader, made the subject of “Unsafe at Any Speed.” Bush also notes that many things made the intersection a fairly unsafe one – including a small stop sign, which Bush ran, and a pitch-black road with a dangerous intersection. Still though, harrowing experience for the First Lady to go through, and probably one that had a deep effect on the rest of her life. source

Culture: Michelle Obama, unwitting PETA ad model: Fur’s gonna fly.

No, Michelle Obama didn’t pose for a PETA ad with Carrie Underwood, Oprah, and Tyra Banks. She just showed up there by accident. source

World: Japan’s new first lady is a little bit spacier than Michelle Obama

  • While my body was asleep, I think my soul rode on a triangular-shaped UFO and went to Venus. … It was a very beautiful place and it was really green.
  • Japanese first-lady-to-be Miyuki Hatoyama • Whose husband, Yukio Hatoyama, will be taking office as prime minister soon. Wow. Can we borrow some of this lady’s drugs? First ladies have never been this crazy (i.e. awesome) in the U.S. • source

U.S.: Mark Sanford and Jenny Sanford: No longer under the same roof

  • Jenny (and her sons) moved out Friday. South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford continues to be on the outs with his wife Jenny, with the state’s First Lady moving her stuff out yesterday. She plans to take the kids back to Charleston, where they’ll attend school. Both husband and wife said this was for the best for now but said they planned to continue to work out family problems. Personally, we would have loved to see Mark move out into the doghouse. source

U.S.: Hilary Clinton was Secretary of Stating so hard, she broke her elbow

  • She fall down and go boom. Hilary Clinton, everyone’s favorite White House figure that lost in the primaries to Barack Obama, had an accident last night which resulted in a broken elbow. She’ll be back at work soon, but she needs surgery. Let’s get it over with and just give her a bionic arm already. source

Culture, U.S.: The first lady’s favorite perk so far? Getting on “Sesame Street”

  • I’m on a high. I never thought I’d be on Sesame Street with Elmo and Big Bird.
  • First Lady Michelle Obama • Who noted that “it’s probably the best thing I’ve done so far in the White House.” Some would say that this is incredibly shallow, but think about it – this show (beyond its marketing juggernaut status) has been one of the greatest icons of American education and entertainment since it first hit the airwaves 40 years ago. And, as kids of that era, both Barack and Michelle were among the first beneficiaries of the show. Cookie Monster is much deeper than he looks. • source
