World: Ashes to ashes: If you’re in Europe and want to fly, it sucks to be you

  • 18,600 number of flights that were
canceled yesterday due to the erupting Iceland volcano
  • 16,000 number of flights that will be
canceled today for the very same freaking reason source
  • » How long could this go on, anyway? The ash, which has a very damaging effect on aircraft (think what Lava soap does to your hands, except with an expensive plane), could be in cloud form for the next 24 hours at least; it’s causing chaos for European travelers, who have been forced to travel by boat, car, train or anything non-plane-related.

Tech: Facebook gets crap for allowing people to upload stranger photos

  • It’s apparently a huge privacy thing. Facebook – and Google, for that matter – allow you to upload photos and videos of people not on the site, without their consent. Now the Swiss and German governments are all up in arms about this, apparently missing the fact that you can do this on any other site on the Internet. Just to prove this point, we grabbed this photo from Flickr of some dudes at a party. We don’t know them, but they seem like they’re having fun. source

Tech: Hoaxsters play on Europeans’ fears of Google Street View

  • Google’s got a LOT of PR problems right now. Some of them are legitimate (see Google Buzz), others are simply a side effect of the company’s size. But the fact of the matter is, this hoax, plotted last week while we were complaining about the snow, is pretty dang funny. The car is fake. So is the rage. But the undercurrent is definitely real. source

World: Greece: Conservatives have a whole new country to hate now

  • Greece voted for a bunch of socialists. The center-right government of Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis flopped hard at Sunday’s election, finding themselves on the losing end of a snap election. George Papandreou, leader of the Socialist party, will become the new Prime Minister. The party, which looks like it’s filled with a bunch of geniuses because they pushed for the snap election, promises to bring the country back to economic strength. source

Sports: The Minnesota Timberwolves on the short end of the Ricky Rubio saga

  • I don’t think the disappointment should overshadow the big picture. Ricky is the youngest player in the draft. He’ll be 20 in two years. I can think of a lot worse things that can happen to us as a franchise. We tried and came very close.
  • David Kahn, Minnesota Timberwolves VP of basketball operations • Discussing the complications created by young Spanish phenom Ricky Rubio choosing to stay in Europe for two more years (the buyout clause in his contract helped his decision). The Timberwolves are like the college boyfriend for a girl who still hasn’t completely gotten over her high school sweetheart. Eventually, she’s going to look forward – well, as soon as she stops looking back. • source

World: Missing Russian ship The Arctic Sea found, with crew still alive

  • The Arctic Sea was discovered at 1 a.m., Moscow time today 300 miles off the Cape Verde islands. All crewmembers are alive and they are feeling well. They were not under armed control.
  • Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov • Regarding the fate of the ship, which had been missing since last month. The ship’s disappearance captured the attention of Europe – with lots of speculation as to whether pirates hijacked it – due to the fact that, well, it’s a giant cargo ship and it went undetected for over two weeks on waters which are well-trafficked. The ship was carrying a lot of wood – $2 million worth of timber. • source

Offbeat: Hilarious breakup #2: He went to Europe, she didn’t get the memo

  • Kind of hilarious, but really, it’s tragic. We have no clue if this video is real. But we don’t care. It’s still crazy. Jay David writes/presents an interesting yarn out of a girl who didn’t listen to him say that he was leaving for Europe multiple times.source
