Politics: I won’t back down, part 1: Charlie Rangel’s ethics charges

  • 13 ethics charges against a guy who wouldn’t back down source
  • » An unexpected result: Many in Congress expected Rangel to strike a deal to avoid a politically embarrassing trial, but instead, here we are. Some close to him, however, suggest that Rangel, a co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, believes he did nothing wrong.

Politics: Charles Rangel won’t resign; Democrats wet themselves big time

  • Well, it wouldn’t be the American thing to do. I think I owe it to the process to find out first what the investigative committee finds out.
  • Rep. Charles Rangel • On his decision to see his potential ethics trial through. Rangel, of course, is a legend in Congress, and could find his legendary status in jeopardy with this trial. (He denies the charges.) Rangel’s decision could be politically damaging for the Democrats, who honestly just want him to go away so they can focus on other things, like not getting their butts kicked in November. A separate New York Daily News report suggests, though, that the REAL reason he plans to stay in office is that he needs to pay for his legal fees. source

U.S.: Ethics charges: So, what is Charles Rangel facing, anyway?

  • The charges are unspecified. The allegations, though … This sounds pretty bad for Charlie. According to the Sunlight Foundation, the longtime New York congressman reportedly omitted between $239,026 and $831,000 from his financial disclosures (assets either purchased, sold or held), and also reportedly had some shady dealings with AIG. He’s had a rough couple of years, and stepped down from his chairmanship of the Ways and Means Committee back in March. Poor Charlie. source

Politics: Eric Massa’s got an ethics investigation, tickling on his hands

  • Dude paid some big bills at a fairly bad time to pay big bills. The former New York congressman, who left in a storm of scandal, tickling and general idiocy, paid off nearly $70,000 in bills (including to a campaign manager) in the days after he left office. So that’s getting investigated. On top of that drama, House Ethics Committee thinks his case is worthy of its own investigative SUBCOMMITTEE. You’d think he hit on some pages over IM or something. source

Politics: Eric Massa loved his interns, but they didn’t love him back

  • It took a year of complaints to get Congress on Massa. So, let’s say you’re an employer, and you have a middle manager who keeps hitting on his interns and low-level staffers. He goes out of his way to puts them in weird situations. He says inappropriate things to them. And he talks a little salty at work. So, what do you do? If you’re senior Democratic staff, you keep it quiet for a year and let it blow up on Glenn Beck. Heck of a job, Brownie. source

Politics: How awkward is it “to have a political argument with a naked man?”

  • Eric Massa has reportedly seen Rahm Emanuel naked. It’s a good thing this video doesn’t have any video in it, because it would probably be disturbing to watch. Anyway, Massa, a New York congressman who left office today under the weight of an ethics scandal involving a male staffer he made sexual comments to, decided to let ‘er rip on a radio show, calling Obama’s Chief of Staff the “son of the devil spawn.” Speaking of our boy Rahm, this New York Times profile piece on the dude looks incredibly entertaining.
