Politics: Oh Charlie: Mr. Rangel’s censure swift, kinda embarrassing

  • Assaulting a fellow member of Congress. Treasonous conduct. Selling appointments to a military academy. Bribing people. Committing acts of payroll fraud. Sexual misconduct with congressional pages (who, by the way, are 16 years old when working in Congress). And now the latest reason for a censure: Using rent-controlled apartments at extremely undervalued rates while not paying taxes, failing to report income on a property being rented out in the Dominican Republic, keeping tax loopholes that benefit major donors, fundraising with house letterheads, and overall general corruption. Charlie Rangel’s had a pretty busy past couple of years, hasn’t he? source

Politics: Charlie Rangel rambles about censure like a depressed old coot

  • Oh God, this crap is just depressing. Charlie Rangel is on his way to a censure, the House’s first since 1983. And Rangel is just rambling on and onnnnnnnnn. For the love of God. Hey Charlie, we understand why. But you look pathetic. source

Politics: Charles Rangel walks out of his House ethics hearing

“Fifty years of public service is on the line. And I truly believe that I am not being treated fairly. I deserve a lawyer.” Rangel needs a new defense team. His old one left in September. source

Politics: Three major things to watch for in today’s primary races

  • delawareGOP establishment candidate Mike Castle takes on Tea Partier
Christine O’Donnell; if Castle wins, he wins in November. If O’Donnell does, all bets are off.
  • rangel The ethics-tainted congressman hasn’t lost the establishment and could win today, though that wouldn’t mean he’s out of the ethics woods by any means.
  • palinThe political kingmaker has endorsed five different candidates in today’s primaries. Are any of them gonna win, anyway? It could be a bellwether. source

Politics: Happy birthday Charlie Rangel! Ethics trials are good presents

  • Strangely enough, some guests can’t attend his party. Rangel, who turns 80 today, plans to have a $200-a-plate dinner gala tonight, with the proceeds going to Rangel’s ethics-stained reelection campaign. He has invited a number of political bigwigs who may or may not show up – including Bill Clinton (can’t make it), David Paterson (not confirmed), Charles Schumer (not confirmed) and Michael Bloomberg (not confirmed). Worst of all, the night’s entertainment, Aretha Franklin, can’t make it either, due to a rib injury. The 20-term congressman recently made a passionate speech about his plight. source

Politics: President Obama to Rep. Charlie Rangel: Drop Dead

  • I think Charlie Rangel served a very long time and served his constituents very well. But these allegations are very troubling. He’s somebody who’s at the end of his career. Eighty years old. I’m sure that what he wants is to be able to end his career with dignity. And my hope is that it happens.
  • President Barack Obama • Saying that Charlie Rangel should retire and just go away. The House ethics subcommittee has recommended a reprimand for Rangel, which would be light compared to the censure and expulsion he could get. Still, though, Rangel won’t admit his guilt and as a result is making the situation much worse for himself. But if he’s so convinced of his innocence, should he quit? source

Politics: I won’t back down, part 1: Charlie Rangel’s ethics charges

  • 13 ethics charges against a guy who wouldn’t back down source
  • » An unexpected result: Many in Congress expected Rangel to strike a deal to avoid a politically embarrassing trial, but instead, here we are. Some close to him, however, suggest that Rangel, a co-founder of the Congressional Black Caucus, believes he did nothing wrong.

Politics: Charles Rangel won’t resign; Democrats wet themselves big time

  • Well, it wouldn’t be the American thing to do. I think I owe it to the process to find out first what the investigative committee finds out.
  • Rep. Charles Rangel • On his decision to see his potential ethics trial through. Rangel, of course, is a legend in Congress, and could find his legendary status in jeopardy with this trial. (He denies the charges.) Rangel’s decision could be politically damaging for the Democrats, who honestly just want him to go away so they can focus on other things, like not getting their butts kicked in November. A separate New York Daily News report suggests, though, that the REAL reason he plans to stay in office is that he needs to pay for his legal fees. source
