  • Paris-based Alassane Ouattara spokeswoman Sogona Bamba-Arnault • Explaining how Ivory Coast strongman Laurent Gbagbo was captured, after months of conflict over an election that didn’t go Gbagbo’s way. U.S., World: Russian spies! Intrigue! Is this the Cold War or something?

  • It’s right out of a John le Carré novel. It will interesting to see how it plays out next couple of days and weeks from an international point of view and law enforcement point of view.
  • Former US attorney Stan Twardy • Describing the events that led to the U.S. arrest of ten reported Russian spies. You know, spies from one of our allies. What’s funny is that Obama was hanging out at Ray’s Hell Burger with Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, the FBI was very close to catching the spies – some of whom had been in the U.S. for a long time. (Disclosure: Julius is a spy. And since we’re disclosing it, a not very good one.) source

World: More Taliban leadership starting to drop into Pakistan’s hands

  • Mullah Salam and Mullah Mohammad were the most merciless individuals. Most of the terror, executions and other crimes committed in northern Afghanistan were on their orders.
  • Kunduz Province police chief Gen. Razaq Yaqoobi • Regarding two other recent captures on the heels of Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar earlier this week. Mullah Abdul Salam, the Taliban’s leader in Kunduz, and Mullah Mohammed were captured by Pakistani forces, possibly with the help of the CIA – just like Baradar. While it’s definitely impressive, is this a major turning point? We’ll see. source

U.S., World: Like an elephant, a ship captured by Somali pirates never forgets

  • Due to Maersk Alabama following maritime industry’s best practices such as embarking security teams, the ship was able to prevent being successfully attacked by pirates. This is a great example of how merchant mariners can take pro-active action to prevent being attacked.
  • Central Command director Vice Adm. Bill Gortney • Exclaiming his pure joy that the Maersk Alabama didn’t get ganked by Somali pirates a second time. The difference this time? The ship had a security staff that could create ear-piercing sounds. And guns. Can’t forget the guns. • source

World: Kidnapped New York Times reporter David Rohde tells his story

  • I thought of my wife and family and was overcome with shame. An interview that seemed crucial hours earlier now seemed absurd and reckless.
  • New York Times reporter David S. Rohde • Describing the situation that led to his capture by the Taliban in Afghanistan last year. Rohde, investigative journalist he is, is writing in-depth about his experience this week for the Times. You might remember the incident as the one Wikipedia hid on purpose to avoid it leaking to the mainstream media. Rohde’s story will be spilling onto the site all week. Block off some time to read it – it’s not often a reporter returns from such circumstances largely unharmed. • source

Culture: Roman Polanski to Swiss: Will you guys let me go? Please?

  • The director’s hoping for leniency. Roman Polanski submitted an application to a a Swiss court today asking to be let go. He’s willing to have limitations set on his freedom. The court will decide in the next few weeks whether to let him go. Man, if they let him go after all the fuss they made about capturing him … that would be a #)&!storm. source

U.S.: Here’s a quote in the Jaycee Dugard case bound to stick with you

  • That’s the one I want. She’s cute, but she’s with the other kids. Let’s come back later and get her.
  • Phillip Garrido (according to his wife, Nancy) • When the couple went “child-shopping” before Jaycee Dugard’s capture. He was looking for a cute blonde, and Dugard fit the bill. You remember that whole thing you were told as a kid about not talking to strangers and that sort of thing? This is why. People like Phillip Garrido are actually out there. • source
