Politics: Mickey Kaus: WTF is a Slate columnist doing running for Senate?

You’d think a California Senate candidate who wrote a political blog for Slate for over a decade would have nothing to say. But you’d be surprised. source

Music: Kanye writes a huge screed on creativity and loss. Worth a read

  • Of course this sounds arrogant. But it also sounds sincere. Kanye is talking about the death of fashion designer Alexander McQueen, his mom’s death, and his own creativity. Too bad he wrote about it in loud, annoying all-caps text (in a faint, light color) so it’s kind of hard to read. Make the effort to squint. It’ll be the best squinting you do all day. source

Offbeat: Awesome blog: “Bank Notes: A collection of bank robbery notes”

From mean to deadly to nice and meek, bank robbers have different ways of handling notes. This guy’s kinda sinister. (Hat tip Andrew Sullivan) source

Politics: “I took my son to Hooters, and now my blog’s flooded with comments”

  • My 11 year boy has reached the age where girls at school are showing interest in him but he is not ready to reciprocate with equal interest in them. The trip to Hooters, I saw, as an opportunity to see how he conducts himself around women.
  • “Daddy blogger” Bob Elston • Describing his reasoning behind taking his 11-year-old kid to Hooters on his blog. The post, complete with photo of kids next to Hooters girl, created a lot of controversy due to the fact that, uh, some might consider it an “unorthodox” approach to parenting. We disagree. We suggest every 11-year-old go to Hooters specifically to annoy overly puritanical human beings. Have you ever been to Hooters? It’s no worse than an episode of “Beavis and Butthead.” • source

Biz, Tech: Blog or news source? The inconsistent ways of Google News

  • Dividing content along these lines is like classifying brownies based on whether they were baked in aluminum or glass pans. There’s no difference, and it obscures what you really want know: if they contain chocolate chips.
  • Neiman Journalism Lab blogger Zachary M. Seward • Making a strong, interesting point about Google News’ new, and very inconsistent, labeling policies of blogs. Here’s one example: Talking Points Memo recently switched back to being a news source from being a blog. Here’s another (weirder) one: Gizmodo is a news source, and Deadspin is a blog, despite the fact that both are owned by Gawker Media. And the process of getting added to Google News, anyway, seems completely arbitrary. By the way, we love how Seward worded this. • source

Culture: Craigslist’s Missed Connections are an art in their own right

Missed Connections
  • We saw Sophie Blackall somewhere in Brooklyn. (We missed her.) She was sketching a little piece of heaven called “Missed Connections.” It’s one of those brilliant ideas which was begging to be done. In a few years, expect Blackall’s blog to become a Nora Ephron movie.source

Tech: From blog hub to … blog: Technorati shifts gears a little

  • We like their new advertising service, though. Technorati, a fairly well-known blog search engine that feels like it’s fighting a little bit of irrelevance thanks to Twitter and Facebook, is looking to have some blogs of its own. A number of people got invites from the service to become writers for the site, which is a little strange because of the fact that their main service facilitates traffic for other blogs. We’ll be keeping our eye out. source

U.S.: Have nothing better to do today? Read Phillip Garrido’s blog

  • The Creator has given me the ability to speak in the tongue of angels in order to provide a wake-up call that will in time include the salvation of the entire world.
  • Phillip Garrido • In a post on his bat#(&! isane blog, “Voices Revealed.” He’s been updating it in bits and pieces over the last couple of years, although things have picked up in the last couple of weeks. It must’ve been a sign he was about to be arrested. In other news, the authorities noted that the giveaway in the Jaycee Dugard case was the fact that his children seemed like robots. • source

Music: Ryan Adams needs to review more retro video games

  • Playing Gorf is like getting wasted, or what I remember about getting wasted: It’s loud, it’s confusing, there are a bunch of lights going off, people (robots) are shooting at you, you need pizza, etc., then its game over.
  • “D.R. Adams” • In a blog post for The Awl, where he discusses being a teenager, playing “Gorf” and listening to Danzig. A reference to “Moonlighting” gets in there, too. You know, Ryan Adams might be an overcreative screw-up, but he’s sure an entertaining one. • source
