U.S.: A drag racer wrecks, injuring his cousin. Who does the cousin sue?

  • Basically, under Massachusetts law I’m trying to get compensation for my client anywhere I can.
  • Roland Hughes • Lawyer for the father of Brandon Pereira, who was involved in an accident with his cousin Timothy. Timothy Pereira was drag-racing on the wrong side of the road at 81 mph in a 30 mph zone, and hit another car at high speed, injuring both passengers of that vehicle along with Brandon. Despite the fact that Timothy is in jail facing multiple charges for causing the accident, Hughes filed a lawsuit against the people in the other vehicle. Which is just disgusting. • source

U.S., World: Identified: The remains of a missing pilot from Gulf War I

  • His plane was shot down January 17, 1991 The Department of Defense today identified the remains of Captain Michael Scott Speicher, who was killed in Iraq during the first Gulf War. Dental records confirmed the match. The Navy pilot’s remains had been unidentified for years – as well as the fate of Speicher. The pilot was believed by some to be held captive by Saddam Hussein. “Our Navy will never give up looking for a shipmate,” said Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations, “regardless of how long or how difficult that search may be.” source

Biz, U.S.: What happens to the vehicles clunked for cash?

  • It’s kind of backwards because we’re used to fixing them. But it’s kind of fun to destroy them at the same time.
  • Auto technician John Eichorn • Describing what he does with the gas-guzzler vehicles exchanged in the Cash-for-Clunkers program. Eichorn has to put a special chemical in the motor that freezes it, preventing it from running (the vehicle gets a special stamp noting this), but other parts of the vehicle can be re-used once it’s brought to a salvage yard. “Some of it is a shame because they are good running vehicles,” he says, “but the program wouldn’t be effective if the car wasn’t destroyed because it can’t be on the road anymore.” • source
