U.S.: Good grades for good reporting? Prosecutors attack journalism program

  • Why are we talking about our grades when we should be talking about whether there’s an innocent man in prison?
  • Evan Benn • A former student of Northwestern journalism professor David Protess. Protess’ investigative journalism class is under investigation in the case of a 1978 killing of a security guard in Illinois. Why’s that? His class tends to uncover leads in cases such as this one (where they have evidence to prove they have the wrong man), and the prosecutor’s suggesting that students do it not for the reporting or the investigation, but for better grades. Deplorable action by the prosecution. (FYI: This is an AP story we linked; we don’t like to do this, but felt the subject matter was too good and vital to not run.) • source

U.S.: Saddest story of the day: Deer escapes lions at National Zoo, still dies

  • This story isn’t nearly as scary as the woman who got bitten by a polar bear after jumping in the water, but in a lot of ways, it’s more dramatic and sad. This deer accidentally found itself in the lion enclosure at the National Zoo in D.C. and had a heck of a time getting away (as the video above attests). It succeeded eventually, but died anyway due to injuries it sustained in the escape. :(source

  • Kimberly Brooks • Describing the humiliation she went through when her ex-husband, Robert Webb, came out. Many advocates of gay marriage, particularly spouses of men and women who later came out, argue that if the stigma that went with gay relationships went away, situations like Brooks’ could be avoided. Brooks, for her part, regards her role in the ending relationship as “collateral damage.” • source

  • Anyone find it vaguely amusing that West Texas is so strongly Democratic? Anyway, The NYT’s graphical map of the vote breaks down by district how your rep voted. Joseph Cao is alone in his principles. And when you’re done with this graphic, here’s one specifically on Democrats who voted no. (The most surprising “no” vote? Dennis J. Kucinich, who argued that the bill didn’t go far enough.)source
