U.S.: With interracial marriages up, fewer black women are getting married

  • » Why this is becoming an issue: Simply put, black women in the U.S. are finding it harder to marry within their race. The new study released Friday by the Pew Research Center finds that fewer black women are married as a result of a gradual decline in the number of black men to marry. Prof. Steven Ruggles, director of the Minnesota Population Center, explains: “When you add in the prison population, it pretty well explains the extraordinarily low marriage rates of black women.”  Other races are also more willing to look beyond their heritage to marry. Half of all Asians in the U.S., for example, don’t marry another Asian. source

Biz, U.S.: BP’s CEO: We didn’t plan for an oil spill below the surface

  • What is undoubtedly true is that we did not have the tools you would want in your tool kit.
  • BP CEO Tony Hayward • Regarding his company’s lack of plan to take care of the massive oil spill that happened on their watch. While there has been some good news today – they managed to cut that pipe, which may allow them to further limit the damage caused by the spill – the fact of the matter is that they didn’t have a plan. Sure, they had tools ready to take care of an Exxon Valdez-like situation, but they had no plan for any sort of trouble below the surface. Hayward calls it “an entirely fair criticism.” We call it downright unbelievable. source

  • 2005 In Aruba, Natalee Holloway went missing and is presumed dead. Dutch student Joran van der Sloot is a suspect, but evidence against him is weak.
  • 2008 After the case dragged on and on (and on – thanks Nancy Grace), prosecutors try and fail to re-arrest van der Sloot after new evidence surfaces.
  • 2010 In Peru, van der Sloot is the main suspect in the murder of Stephany Flores Ramirez, and this time, there’s sufficient evidence. She was found in his hotel room. source

  • Americans have more; the U.K., Canada and Australia have less. Ah, nothing like a story about cigarettes to make you feel more alive. Researchers did a test of cigarette butts to see what sort of chemicals and toxins the cigarettes have. Apparently, different countries use different formulas and as a result, different countries have more dangerous smokes. And by different countries, we really mean “the U.S.” (Scary, right?) source

  • OH THE HUMANITY! BP has screwed up like four dozen times in the last month, so why wouldn’t the saw they were using to cut the pipe in the oil spill get stuck IN THE PIPE? Seriously. We bet you all thought it was going to be a bunch of aliens that were going to end the human race. But no. It’s a saw blade stuck in a #(&(@(&! pipe that did it. U.S.: Obama: “Oh, hey … Jan. Sorry about ripping your state so hard.”

  • The president’s got an Arizona governor-shaped guest coming this week. In case you forgot with the oil spill and Israel messing with flotillas, Arizona’s immigration law is still an annoyingly big deal. And Obama hasn’t been all that gracious about the law. So, as a way to pull out an olive branch, he’s bringing Gov. Jan Brewer to the Oval Office on Thursday. We know neither of them can wait. source
