U.S.: Gulf oil spill: Obama plans to reopen offshore drilling soon

  • The blocking off of drilling affected thousands of Gulf Coast jobs. As bad as the oil spill is, the side effect of stopping offshore drilling to get regulators back in lockstep was nearly as damaging for the region’s economy. When the new regulations are put into place as soon as Tuesday, expect new rules on shallow water oil and gas drilling. Also, the White House is considering canning the liability cap on oil spills, because, well, hey, BP can afford to pay for the mess. source

  • We’re no longer dealing with a large, monolithic spill. We’re dealing with an aggregation of hundreds of thousands of patches of oil that are going a lot of different directions.

  • Hillary Clinton, and several thousand diplomats around the world are going to have a heart attack when they wake up one morning, and find an entire repository of classified foreign policy is available, in searchable format, to the public.
  • SPC Bradley Manning • Regarding some of the documents he sent to Wikileaks. Manning was arrested two weeks ago for reportedly leaking a number of documents to the site, most notably this video, in which a number of innocent civilians are killed in a helicopter attack. Manning was turned in by a hacker, and has not been charged yet. But holy crap. This guy gave Julian Assange and his boys a lot of classified info. source

  • » Freaking finally: Thad Allen and his boys are way more positive about this result than they have been about others. They hope to slowing increase the amount of oil captured. Oil, by the way, is still getting through the vents, which is why they aren’t capturing all of it.

  • There’s lot of apocalyptic people in environmental circles. A lot of those people were outraged that we presented an optimistic view of the future. There’s a dark vision driving us, but we’re about moving toward a positive picture of what can be done.

The group believes in the theory of “peak oil,” where there’s an economic collapse and “population die-off” that comes as the amount of oil in the world dwindles. The group is growing quickly – starting with just two chapters in 2008, it now has 68. Some granola hippies think we’re all gonna go through this post-apocalyptic drama. And that’s right, kids. U.S.: Two dudes arrested before reportedly going to hang with terrorists

  • who Two American citizens, Mohamed Hamoud Alessa, 20, and Carlos Eduardo Almonte, 26. The terror suspects were both arrested at JFK Airport late last night.

U.S.: Porn star murder? Steve Driver suspected of killing Tom Dong

  • The porn star is reportedly surrounded in a house by a SWAT team. On Wednesday, Driver, whose real name is Stephen Clancy Hill, reportedly killed Dong and injured two others with a machete-like weapon after finding out he was getting fired and kicked out of the DVD production facility where he had been both working and living. Hill had prior convictions. This situation is messed up and we don’t know what to make of it. source

U.S.: BP’s new cap grabbing some, but not all of, the leaking oil

  • 6,000 number of barrels of oil the new cap is allowing BP to transfer per day
  • 19k-25k number of barrels that are currently spewing out of the pipe daily source
  • » A starting point: This total does not reflect a high point for how much oil they can siphon. To prevent the pressure from causing an explosion, they’re allowing some of the oil to go through vents which they plan to later close. So expect that 6,000 barrel total to go up.

U.S.: Meet Obama’s shoulder-tapped nominee for intelligence head

  • Who is this guy?James Clapper, currently working as the undersecretary of defense for intelligence, spent 32 years in the Air Force, then later joined Robert Gates in the Bush administration. Like Gates, he stuck around with Obama.

    Early complaintsDemocrats and Republicans have criticized the choice because Clapper isn’t an outsider and has deep ties to the Defense Department. Oh, and they like complaining. source
