Tech: We have an urge to play Mega Man all of a sudden

  • If you’re gonna go retro, might as well go full-tilt. Back in the dark ages of video games, Mega Man was king – and his style of gaming was all but ignored for years, in an attempt to making gaming more complicated. But a couple of years ago, they decided to go full retro again with Mega Man 9, and now with the new Mega Man 10, they’ve decided to create a commercial to match. We’re gonna eat some Legend of Zelda cereal now. source

Tech: Google points out more cyber-suppression, this time in Vietnam

  • The controversy stems from a bauxite mining project backed by China. Late Tuesday night, Google noted a series of cyber-attacks which seem to be targeted at Vietnamese people from around the world. While the attack isn’t as sophisticated as the China attack which led to Google leaving that country last week, it certainly left a mark on what Google calls “an important and emotionally charged issue in the country.” source

  • The first Xerox copier hit offices 50 years ago this month. One of modern history’s greatest, if most annoying inventions, it singlehandedly turned the former Haloid Xerox into a household name and in the process created a key part of the office. One that is often broken (the early versions caught on fire) and often a bit huge. “It was a product no one knew they needed until they had it,” said David Owen, who actually wrote a book called “Copies in Seconds: Chester Carlson and the Birth of the Xerox Machine.” source

Tech: Pretend you’re a scientist: Study these particle physics terms

  • hadron A particle that has mass,
    bound together from smaller parts called quarks. Protons and electrons are types of hadron
    (which we didn’t misspell).
  • collider A device that takes two beams headed in opposite directions and makes them run into each other, in an attempt to make two sets of particles combine.
  • higgs boson The thing which is suspected to give matter its mass if Peter Higgs‘ theory pans out. The Large Hadron Collider is trying to figure out whether it’s real or not.
  • dark matter This weird, cool stuff that
    scientists think makes up a quarter of the universe, and kinda shapes the trajectory of the universe a little. Like we said, weird and cool. source

  • 99.9% the speed of the collider compared
    to the speed of light; any faster, and we might all die source

Tech: Apple may be taking the iPhone to Verizon, or maybe not

  • Seems the one thing iPhone users hate the most about their phones is the carrier. Apple’s had an exclusive contract with AT&T for nearly three years now, and with the dropped calls and lack of network expansion, users want another option. Now the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Verizon will get a version of the iPhone this year. It’d be awesome, but let’s remember that analysts have been burned before by the promise of Verizon. source.

Tech: Microsoft admits it screwed up search, focused on the wrong thing

  • Google owns the “long tail” results. MS is just trying to accept its niche. Why did Microsoft reboot its entire search engine last year? Simple. They realized it was focusing on the wrong thing, good results for obvious searches, when the real money was to be made in more obscure results. “On any given a month,” said Microsoft Bing manager Yusuf Mehdi, “one-third of queries that show up on Bing, it’s the first time we’ve ever seen that query. A huge chunk of those, we’ll never see again.” As a result, Bing has a different focus, one that involves partnerships with startups and depth on intelligent queries. source
