Tech: Mark Zuckerberg talks to the New Yorker; we know you won’t read it

  • Can’t wait for “The Social Network” to come out? We have good news for you! The New Yorker has its own take on Mark Zuckerberg, and this one comes from the Jesse Eisenberg-looking man himself. Key line from the entire thing (from when he regrettably called his own users dumb something-or-others over IM): “If you’re going to go on to build a service that is influential and that a lot of people rely on, then you need to be mature, right? I think I’ve grown and learned a lot.” All grown up! And he’s only 26! source

Tech: Famous first words: Nokia VP quits before being ahead

  • I am committed, perhaps even obsessed, with getting Nokia back to being number one in high-end devices.
  • Nokia VP Anssi Vanjoki • In a blog post he wrote soon after starting in his position with the company way back in July (for those playing at home, it’s September). He’s already submitted his resignation. Why? Nokia is currently in a state of disarray because they haven’t really done anything stupidly innovative in a long time. The Nokia N8 is a start, but it isn’t on the market yet, so we can’t judge. As for Vanjoki, he doesn’t seem so obsessed with getting Nokia back to the top anymore. “The time has come to seek new opportunities in my life,” he said. source

Tech: Because we want fast Internet, we’re moving to Chattanooga

  • 1GB the speed of the Tennessee city’s upcoming bandwidth upgrade
  • 200x its speed compared to that of the average U.S. broadband speed – and as fast as Hong Kong’s
  • $350 the amount it’ll cost each month; if you’re a decent-sized business, that’s gravy source

Tech: “Here You Have” hacker doesn’t like the U.S. very much

  • I could smash all those infected but I wouldn’t. I hope all people understand that I am not negative person!
  • Haker “Iraq Resistance” • Regarding his status as the guy behind the “Here You Have” worm, which made many corporate IT department not-fun places to be on Thursday. He’s an anti-U.S. type, if you didn’t figure it out by the handle. He also has a video where he notes his actions are not as bad as those of Koran-burning-wannabe Terry Jones. Considering that his worm was responsible for as much as 10 percent of the spam on the entire Internet on Thursday morning, we’re sure some network engineers would disagree. source

Tech: Now you feel old: Super Mario Bros. turns 25 today

  • Happy birthday, brah! 25 years ago today, the greatest video game of any generation, “Super Mario Bros.” was released upon the world. With its iconic imagery (which is still often a target of parody and admiration today) and its trendsetting gameplay, pretty much any game with even a minor dash of depth to it owes something to “Super Mario Bros.” for proving it was possible. Still one of our favorite things about life in general. source

Tech: Demand Media IPO: Crap content may be massive cash cow

  • $1.5
    billion
the potential market cap for Demand Media’s upcoming IPO
  • $1.2
    billion
the current market cap of the New York Times Company source
  • » To understand how crazy that is, let’s point out what the two companies make. The New York Times (minus the Jayson Blair saga) has been known for creating some of the best journalism known to man. Demand Media, through sites like eHow and Cracked.com, is far more known for shoveling as much SEO-friendly content onto the Web as they can. Yet, they could be worth more in an IPO. What is our world coming to?

Tech: “Google Instant” trend continues, this time with “iTunes Instant”

  • Instant is still the new black. And this example, which uses iTunes, proves it. Stephen Ou, all of 15 years old, has coded functionality that people have felt was missing from iTunes for a while. He gets affiliate money from Apple, to boot. Pretty awesome if you ask us. source

Tech: Microsoft dances on the iPhone’s grave a little too early

  • Well, that’s, uh … something. Microsoft’s so excited about launching Windows Phone 7 that they took to the streets in a Thriller dance and held a mock funeral for the iPhone, which we’re pretty sure is in no danger of being nicked by MS. WTF, guys? source

Tech: Android making dramatic inroads in smartphone share

  • 3.9% Android’s worldwide market share at the end of 2009
  • 17.7% Android’s projected market share by late 2010 source
  • » And it gets better: Slowly but surely, Android is gunning for the 900-pound gorilla in the market, RIM. In the most recent quarter, Android had sold 27 percent of all smartphones in the past six months, topping iPhone’s 23 percent share and closing in on BlackBerry’s 33 percent share. Of course, as nobody ever notes in any of these articles – ever – Google offers up their OS for free and sells it on a variety of models sold by numerous companies. To compare, Apple sells two iPhone models for high margins. Of course Google’s going to own the market.
