Tech: If you’re on AT&T with your iPhone, your 3G will go faster soon

  • AT&T is upgrading their network, with a nationwide rollout soon. 3G speeds are pretty fast, but it could be faster. As a result, the phone company is adding speed upgrades which should boost the already zippy theoretical speed from 1.7 Mbps to 3.6Mbps. But those numbers are misleading – real world usage is currently about 700Kbps. The boost should hit by the end of the year in most markets, and AT&T is also working on a 4G network. As long as we can use our hacked iPhones to download torrents, we’re happy. source

Tech, U.S.: Gavin Newsom is assisting in Twitter jumping the shark even more

  • It’s official – running for Gov of CA. Wanted you to be the first to know. Need your help.
  • San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom • Who announced his candidacy for California governor today. It’s not nearly as lame as John McCain talking to George Stephanopoulos in a Tweeterview, but it’s still a crass political move at this point in the game. • source

Politics, Tech: Are Google Profiles a good idea? We argue yes.

  • Google Profiles creates an easily-searchable public page for you and your life. It’s not a new concept – Yahoo has done this for years – but Google has integrated it with other Web services really well, and it makes you easier to find online. source
  • Privacy advocates will probably complain. Some jerks will probably say that Facebook already does this quite well. We say this is a good idea because it separates the social networking from the personal aspect. Plus, it’s simple. Simple is good. source

Tech, U.S.: The iPod Touch = The military’s new weapon of choice

  • The military has spent all this money on research and development of technology to use in the field, and Apple’s device has nearly equaled it – and at $230 a pop, it costs a lot less than the $600-$700 devices they usually carry around. And, admit it, it looks cool. Wouldn’t you want to carry around an iPod Touch in Iraq? source
  • Among military uses involve translation software for soldiers in the field, especially in Iraq. Soldiers can also take photos and annotate maps out of the box. The military is also working on its own facial-recognition app to spot terrorism suspects. (No word on if it’s coming to the app store, though we’re guessing no.) source
